Indian wedding ring custom

I’ve noticed that some of my Indian colleagues wear a ring on the right hand index finger. I assume that is a wedding ring, is that right? Is this common throughout the subcontinent, or is this a regionalism? Is it the same for both men and women? Is there an equivalent of the engagement ring of the English speaking world? The only thing I managed to find from google is that this is also a traditional Jewish custom, but I’m pretty sure they’re not Jewish. I don’t know them well enough yet to be asking this type of questions, so I turn to the wisdom of the dopers.

Many cultures use the right hand, both hands have “ring” fingers. In many nations the left hand is traditionally considered unclean because of toileting methods but the Romans believed the left ring finger had a direct link to the heart so used that. It is merely tradition and traditions differ all over.

I spent last summer in southern India (Hyderabad). My married female coworkers wore special necklaces.

I’m Jewish and AFAIK it is not a standard Jewish tradition to wear wedding rings on the right index finger. At least American Jews, who wear engagement and weddings on the left ring finger, like most other Americans.

There are Indian Jews, btw.

Well, you know what they say about things that you read about on the Internet…
