Indians buying back land with casino cash

Story here:

This pleases me. I’ve always been mildly amused at the thought of the white man losing his mortgage payment at Indian casino tables, and the thought of that money now being used to buy back stolen land is almost poetic.

Yup, I’m about 15 miles away from those guys. Used to work down the street. When I worked armored, I even picked up from the Casino on a couple of occasions, usually weekends. (And I just applied for an IT position with them!)

All I gotta say is: Hurray for them! Go Mdewakanton!

I just have two things I’d wish they’d do:

1> They’re buying very expensive land in Shakopee to prevent it from being snapped up for development. This is very cool and I wish them every success, but I have to point out that there are three townships south and west of them where they could start buying land a great deal cheaper at the same time.

2> Given their vast riches, and I know they are not in any way obligated to do so; I wish they’d share more with the other Dakota/Lakota/Nakota tribes, especially the poorer ones out in South Dakota who don’t have the opportunity to make millions from casinos. They are after all, family.

Yep, same here.

I really don’t feel any sympathy for the towns deprived of property tax revenue. Where were they when the tribes were dirt poor and starving?

I love our tribe back home. They started by opening a bingo hall when I was a kid, and over the years have developed that into a sea of wealth. They just put up a gorgeous new hotel last year adjacent to the casino, have built a kidney dialysis center, and pour money into the local schools like it’s going out of style.

I don’t know how much property they’re buying, but I hope it’s a lot!

The largest Native American Casino - and largest single casino on the planet is located 10 minutes from my house in the heart of the Connecticut woods.

Foxwoods

Odd place for it? Wel that’s there the first pequots, Mashantucket Pequots settled. They are not reclaiming any land right now but they’ve got a lot already going for them in this tiny state
