Indirect biological warfare

I was watching “Deadliest Warrior” (Saddam Hussein vs. Pol Pot) last night. During the first demonstration, which involved attacking a guard post and building with multiple weapons, the hosts unable to inspect the dummies for damage due to a swarm of bees.

This made me wondered if similar incidents happened in real life. Are there instances where animals or insects attacked soldiers on either side in a battle? The only example I can think of is the sinking of the USS Indianapolis.

Possibly not what you were looking for, but the Aztecs were largely defeated due to a smallpox epidemic, the disease being introduced during the invasion of Cortez via a sick black slave who accompanied the expedition. The Europeans largely had immunity, while the Indians were decimated.

there are disputed estimates but some say nearly 500 japanese soldiers were killed by crocodiles in world war 2 in an island in burma.

sorry, 900 according to wiki. 1,000 hard-pressed japanese soldiers crossed a large swampy area to join with another group in ramree island, burma. they ignored british pleas for them to surrender. that night, the british heard shots and screams and, most horrible of all, swishing sounds of crocodiles doing the death roll. only 20 japanese soldiers were found alive later by the british.

The Battle of Tanga, sometimes also known as the Battle of the Bees, was the unsuccessful attack by the British Indian Expeditionary Force ‘B’ under Major General A.E. Aitken to capture German East Africa (the mainland portion of present-day Tanzania) during World War I…”:

But then the advance was stopped.[8] Less well trained and equipped battalions of the Imperial Service Brigade scattered and ran away from the battle. The 98th Infantry got attacked by swarms of angry bees and broke up. The bees attacked the Germans as well, hence the battle’s nickname.[9] British propaganda transformed the bee interlude into a fiendish German plot, conjuring up hidden trip wires to agitate the hives.[10]

And I bet they were absolutely thrilled to get taken captive and evacuated by the Brits …

I’ll let my friend Quint tell it.

site is blocked on our end

You can’t get YouTube? Where are you posting from, Pyongyang?

from my stupid office terminal.

My condolences.

I was referring to the sinking of the Indianopolis.
