I swear, people assume that since I speak English, I am English.
My Colonel has sent me an e-mail that a member of his family wants to study Industrial Engineering (whatever that is) in the UK. He is looking for a well-known school outside of high-cost London.
Little help? Anyone know anything about Industrial Engineering schools in the UK?
I’m assuming this is for an undergraduate degree, if so UCAS is a good place to start - this being the centralised admissions service for all uk universities. It also has a section for international students.
It would be helpful to find synonyms for Industrial Engineering when searching - a quick look at wikipedia suggest Operations Management and Production Engineering among others - I’ve picked out those two because they are terms I’ve heard before.
As an international student paying full fees he will be very welcome, and thus it’s well worth emailing the admissions tutor for any course he is interested in, who should be able to supply him with a prospectus.
Regarding quality, there are various places to look for information, one being http://www.timeshighereducation.co.uk/ , another being the results of the National Student Satisfaction Survey which is carried out by HEFCE .
For a masters, try Cranfield University - it specialises in post graduate engineering education and has a very sound reputation.
Here is another newspaper-published survey, and you’ll find of course that they all have differing results.
Good advice to look for all the other possible course title - finding a few large engineering departments and browsing the courses on offer will be very useful in doing this. As will doing some in-depth reading into the course structure, because some might have the right title but the wrong content, or vice versa.
If cost of living is a concern, then obviously avoiding London makes sense, but it might rule out a few other places which can also be pretty expensive, particularly if you’re looking at it through the $/£ exchange rate. Edinburgh, for instance, might be out of the question (only a random example, because I’ve no idea if there’s a decent course there in the first place!)
Thank you both. It gives me a place to start looking. (The British Council ought to be paying me.)
There are Mechanical Engineering degrees over here, also Electrical Engineering which I would guess is what your friend is after.
I’ve several friends who have done those degrees at the University of Portsmouth in Hampshire U.K.
Also there are Civil Engineering degrees but they are all about the Construction industry.
If you need more info about other Unis that do these courses let me know and I’ll try and suss them out for you.
Sorry Paul I’ve just made a promise that I cant keep,am off abroad tomorrow, sorry, sorry, sorry.
I suspect this will drag on a long time. Betcha will be back in time.
Couple of good places,
Mechanical engineering - Leeds University - not, repeat not the similarly named University of Leeds.
Actually I think Leeds University already does quite a lot of research work for industry.
Electrical Engineering - Southampton
I also hear Manchester is very good at both.
Then you get into other disciplines, such as maritime engineering, Southampton again is one of the best in the world.
But it’s in Southampton! I can imagine coming to the UK would be a bit of a trauma in and of itself, but Southampton??
From looking on Wikipedia, there is Leeds Metropolitan University (formerly Leeds Polytechnic) in addition to the University of Leeds. Perhaps that’s what casdave meant.
It didn’t even cross my mind it might have been supposed to say Leeds Met, given how insistent he was about getting the name right!
