Yes, that’s right - Salem County, New Jersey. It’s in South Jersey - if you’re crossing the Delaware River on the Del. Memorial Bridge, that’s Salem County you enter on the Jersey side.
I’m asking because my son is going to college up there, Salem County College, in Carney’s Point. We’ve seen the campus; it’s fairly small, which is good, but my son will need to get a job, and we’re afraid that he’ll really have problems finding one. I don’t think the job market in South Jersey is all that good, unfortunately. So, if you live there and have any job suggestions or housing suggestions, please share with me. My son’s been up there today, trying to get around on public transit, and having a hard time, although he won’t admit to that.
My folks grew up in Bridgeton (Cumberland County), and I’ve been there plenty. He might find something there or in Vineland, but that’s kind of a hike for a college job.
Unless he likes farming, the job market in South Jersey really isn’t all that promising.
Heh, thanks Tripler! He’s actually hoping to get something at a local fast food restaurant. He spent all afternoon yesterday practically, trying to get around on public transit, which is nearly non-existant in South Jersey.
So very strange how things go around; my first three years, my parents (and I, well at least part of the time) lived in Mt. Royal, NJ. I also lived in Princeton for a year, back in 74-75. In 63-64, my Dad taught 7th grade English in Pennsgrove Jr. High, which is in Carney’s Point. laughs I think the students he taught then are probably a year older than I am (nearly 53), so my son could possibly meet someone who had my Dad as a teacher in Jr. High. And - my Mom was organist for the Methodist church in Salem for several years in the 60s. Not to mention that Pennsville was the location of Riverview Park, which unfortunately met it’s demise way back in the 60s. So at least we’re all familiar, somewhat, with that area of South Jersey.
I am pretty familiar with South Jersey (having been born and raised up in North Jersey-Bergen Cty.). Like I mentioned, my grandfolk still live in Bridgeton, my uncle used to be a pastor in Alloway (and I think he’s in Marlton now), I spent many, many summers in Ocean City, and I’ve got family all over Millville, Vineland, Fortescue, and some in Cherry Hill.
So yeah, I’m a “Southern Boy” at times.
Tripler
. . . despite my roots north of the ‘Mason-Trenton Line’.
I think it’s some sort of law that you have to have family in Cherry Hill.
I grew up in central Jersey, on the shore, but I’m afraid I don’t know much about south Jersey except that the Jersey Devil scares the ever-lovin’ snot out of me. My great aunt lived in a retirement community in Medford, and it can get surprisingly desolate out there for being in the most densely populated state.
He shouldn’t try to depend on mass transit, unless maybe he wants to go to Philly or something; then he should have a friend give him a ride to the train station.
Especially if your Jewish. I’m serious. I’ve met Jewish people from all over the country and whenever I mention that my hometown (Mount Laurel) is near Cherry Hill they always have a cousin or a aunt there.
I’m a Burlington County guy and never have had reason to go further south. All’s I know is that South Jersey is the part they were thinking of when they nicknamed Jersey “The Garden State.”
