I just registered a few moments ago. I need to put an icon on the desktop for quick access to the forum. Does anyone know how to get the icon on the desktop? Will be much appreciated.

You mean a web shortcut?
Assuming you are on a Windows PC, right-click a blank bit of desktop, then select ‘New>Shortcut’
When you’re prompted for the URL/Location, paste or type: Straight Dope Message Board - Your direct line to thousands of the smartest, hippest people on the planet, plus a few total dipsticks.
