Sometimes, too, outside relatives, friends, or advocates maintain a web presence for confined inmates. There’s even a Charlie Manson website, maintained by somebody else, and it seems that all the big biker gangs tell you where you can send money to their imprisoned, convicted members.
I’m with Autolycus on this. There is so very much that is worthwhile on the internet, in addition to content of poor quality and the opportunity to commit crime. But I think he’s hit on something here. If the right means of adequate monitoring and control could be contrived, it would be well worth it to the state to make it happen. It’s a way of rehabilitating one’s humanity, and so should help reduce recidivism.
What criminal mentality? He sent an unsolicited letter. According to the semi-hysterical OP it was creepy and threatening. Of course, the OP also seems convinced that the inmate who sent his girlfriend the letter got her address off the internet, based on exactly zero evidence. He also declined to pursue the matter with the prison because it would give the inmate some sort of satisfaction and one doesn’t feed trolls. I’m sorry, but I do not believe that he is in any way a credible source.
That and he’s a selfish bastard for NOT reporting it, for the reason that “he doesn’t want the loser to know he upset them.” Meaning, this guy is allowed to do this to other women, without his supervisors knowing. Meaning, there’s no way to stop this behavior and close the loopholes in the law, other than throwing tantrum about it on the SDMB.
