Innocence and Corruption

Why are we a culture that doesn’t want to lose its innocence? What is the moral superiority of being innocent? Why are sophistication and culture somehow corruption?

  • James Hillman

Well, innocence precludes immorality in most peoples’ books. If one has no knowledge of evil, then one cannot do evil, at least not intentionally. Loss of innocence does not necessarily equate to corruption, but it propels one into a realm where choices become moral or immoral, often without clear borders between the two.

– Smashing Pumpkins

It is an infantile idealization of an untennable position which is illustrated surprisingly well by an otherwise pretty poor film called “The Beach”.
