Just thought Dopers may find this of interest. A documentary was aired last night on the House of Lords. I thought it was pretty interesting and provides insights into the people, purpose and work of the UK’s Upper House. This first episode focusses mainly on the people and the Chamber’s purpose. It was filmed last year so largely before the Brexit vote kicked up.
Really interesting, and shows the positive impact of the House of Lords on legislation.
Yes, there such in the House as Lord Palmer with his massive fancy landed estates, but there’s also the likes of Lord Bird, who started out as a kitchen steward in the House, as a homeless juvenile delinquent and now sits on the coveted red benches.
And couldn’t put it better than Lord Hennessy: ‘You bullshit in there at your peril’.
