Installing a garage door opener off center?

Can a garage door opener be mounted off center? Google has proven reticent about this topic, and I didn’t get any hits searching the SDMBs.

My garage door opener came with the following instructions:

The opener can be installed within 4 feet to the left or right of the door center if there is a torsion spring or center bearing plate in the way of the header bracket or door bracket area. If your door has extension springs, the opener must be installed in the center of the door.

Italics are theirs. I do not know whether these directions apply to all garage door openers; mine is a Craftsman 1/2 hp model 139.

I have seen 1 opener open 2 garage doors. The 2 doors were ‘linked’ by steal brackets. Both doors had the springs n either side. The opener was on one door the closest to the center brackets as possible.

It seemed to work
