What things happen to you that make you feel instant ecstasy or something close to it? For me, many of them involve instant relief from pain. Like if you have a gas bubble that’s trapped in you and it pops out from one end or the other. I’ve heard that relieving the pressure under a swollen fingernail using a red hot needle is incredible but I’ve never experienced it.
Putting a Q-tip into your ear canal (WHICH WE ALL KNOW THAT WE’RE NOT SUPPOSED TO DO) can really trigger a pleasure point.
Damn. I was discussing this with my gf yesterday. After several days of severe foot pain (Metatarsalgia), it “went away”. I thought someone had slipped OxyContin in my dinner.
Is there a single medical term for the feeling of relief/euphoria/elation you feel when severe pain stops?
There are certain foods that trigger for me, but not all the time. Blue cheese is one of them, something like Stilton or St. Agur or Roaring 40s (I have about seven blue cheese right now in my “cheese box”). Last week it was some homemade beef nihari when I was really in the mood for it. A Hunagrian paprikas kolbasz (paprika sausage) will do that too, as will n’duja.
When the people who are billing you incorrectly for a huge amount of money that will be turned over to collections soon enough finally listen to your explanation and agree to clear your account.
Hitting a ball right on the sweet spot. Whether a golf club, tennis racket, or baseball ball, there’s a feeling of effortlessness when you connect right in the dead center; I believe a movie described it as like striking a tuning fork in your loins.
Same for shooting basketball and hitting a perfect swish; it seems like you can feel it go in.
Wrapping up in a warmed-up heated blanket or a blanket right out of the dryer on a chilly day.
I would count any change in temperature from an uncomfortable temperature to a much nicer one, really. Getting a cold drink when it’s hot out,
Also, the moment when you’ve been working your butt off on a project, event, or deadline and it’s FINALLY completed. Over. In the rearview. Even when you enjoyed it and were looking forward to the big event part (but especially if you didn’t particularly), that moment when it’s all done, out of your hands, nothing more you can do, no longer hanging over your head… priceless.
Restaurants in Florida - especially in the warmer months - tend to overuse their air conditioning, so it ends up downright cold while you are inside eating. Oftentimes, I’m shivering when I leave, and walking outside to a nice clear day, with the warm sunshine hitting my body, is a moment to savor
I and a friend were volunteered to help another friend install a central air conditioning system in a dormitory for a group similar to Doctors Without Borders. The dorm was in Mexico and we were there in July. After spending all morning in the attic, we finally got to go outside into the 105 degree weather. It felt like a blast of cold air. Strangest thing I’ve ever felt.
Stopping for a bathroom break and getting back in the car with an empty bladder, sipping an iced soda, A/C blasting on a hot day, merging onto the freeway, ready for a few hours of driving, brings a huge relaxed sigh from me.
Finding out your crush actually crushes back on you.
Being intensely worried about something, only to be relieved to find out the bad won’t happen.
The release near the end of an intense sports game where your team wins on the final penalty kick of the shootout, or a buzzer-beating 3, or game-winning touchdown or turnover.
Once about 35 years ago my alarm woke me after a bad night’s sleep for a very early work start on a cold wet miserable day and I struggled out of bed full of resentment and grumpiness and made it as far as the bedroom door before realising the early alarm was set from the previous day and it was Sunday and I could turn around and flop back into bed and pull the warm covers over me once again.
The relief was so huge I remember it to this day and almost want to repeat it, but of course it’s not something you can re-create on purpose - unless you truly believe you have to get out of bed, the relief at realising you don’t doesn’t arise.
Taking my shoon and socks off after spending a lot of time on my feet.
Pulling my big toe until the joint pops.
Scratching an intensely itchy spot anywhere on me.
A good stretch.
Finally bringing out that sneeze that’s been stuck somewhere just behind my nose for nearly a minute.
