If you are trying to keep the original character of an existing house, I would highly recommend window inserts, as opposed to complete window replacement to improve energy efficiency.
All you need to do is measure VERY CAREFULLY (have a pro do this, really.) take out the stops, and insert your fancy new windows. It’s cheaper and a lot easier. They fit in perfect, and you get to keep the original casing and sills. You can order them with wood that can be stained on the inside, and most of them have exterior cladding colors to match.
It is also much easier to install, and will take just a day or two for most houses to complete. You can do it in the winter, too.
