Intel no-show for AMD's challenge

AMD throws down the gaunlets. Intel says “No thanks”.

It might be a publictiy challenge, and the challenge might not be totally fair (After all, clock speed isn’t everything), but Intel not showing up and just “shrugging” it aside doesn’t improve confidence…

And AMD got all the publicity it wants.

But will the publicity really help AMD with the people who count (their potential future customers)? Unlikely.

To you or me, or to outsiders to the microchip industry, Intel may look cowardly… but will this AMD stunt really make the slightest difference in the mind of future customers? I doubt it strongly.

AMD is a good company that’s made great strides in improving its products, and may well surpass Intel eventually. But when Dell is deciding where to get its chips, they won’t be swayed by such competitions as this.

Do you mean surpass in performance or sales? Because in most cases, AMD performs better than Intel chips. Intel’s server and mobile chips are generally better, though, but for 64-bit and/or dual-core, AMD averages better.

I meant in sales.

Look, I hope AMD does extremely well. They have a huge number of employees here in Austin, and they’ve gone through some very tough times the past few years (several friends of mine were AMD engineers, and were laid off).

It would be great for Austin and for many people I know if AMD started picking up business again. But if they do, it won’t be because of a silly competition.
