– Everyone break out your chess boards.
– If your screen name contains an odd number of characters (spaces count), then you play white. Even, black.
– Just post the next move for your side (when it’s your side’s turn), preceded by the whole game history up to this point (so people can jump in without having to comb the whole thread). Just cut and paste. You should bold your move, too (as opposed to the unbolded game history).
– For clarity’s sake, you should should include exactly which move you are posting in the subject line.
– We’re using old notation (since that’s what I’m familiar with), not new. Please remember that the board coordinates for your next move are therefore determined by the side you are on. If white wants to move to “b2,” for example, that would be “QN2” (Queen’s Knight 2). If black were to move to that same square, however, it would be “QN7.”
– In case of simulpost, only the first post for any given mood counts, the others are disregarded.
– If I can figure out an efective way of diagraming the board (it’s harder than you might think), I will occasionally pop in to do so, but feel free to post the board setup whenever you feel like it (so long as you’re sure that it’s accurate, of course).
I’ll post White’s first move in 60 seconds (we’ll start simple). After that, have at it.
pulykamell, c5 would be black’s QB4, not QB5. I can see where descriptive notation would be a problem for those who aren’t used to it. From now on: Use whichever notation you like, so long as it is accurate and unabridged. No shorthand – write out “h2-h4,” for example, not “h4.”
There are others. They are all free, except for http://www.chessclub.com, which charges $50 a year. There is another one which is a correspondence-type chess: you don’t play speed or at the board, but are allowed a couple of days for moving, but I lost the website. I found it was not very competitive. h4 is the standard notation for pawn from h2 to h4 or from h3 to h4. I don’t see where one has to put in superfluous notations.
That’s it, Mood. I recently had to install a new hard drive and lost all my bookmarks.
Just for comparison, see how much nicer and more concise, algebraic notation is than descriptive:
P-K4 P-QB4
Kt-QB3 Kt-KB3
or long algebraic:
e2-34 c7-c5
Ktb1-c3 Ktg8-f6
Now, look at:
e4 c5
Nc3 Nf6
Moreover, the correct notations are not “b1c3” and “g8-f6,” but Nb1-c3 and Ng8-f6. If you don’t mention the piece, the notation refers to a pawn move, which is here impossible.
Thank you for the corrections. It has been a while since I’ve used chess notation. Now that you are done correcting our grammer, how about pulling up a board and submitting a move? The thread is dying and could use your help.
The main problem with Doper consultation games (we tried some over a year ago) is that the players are of differing standards. One move by an inexperienced player can wreck the position.
Perhaps the best model is when Kasparov played the Rest of the World. The moves for the World were chosen by vote, so blunders were less likely.
I missed that restriction at the OP. I shouldn’t have submitted a black move what with seven letters in my name. Although since there seems to be a distinct lack of players, perhaps that rule can be bent.
