Interesting Moves

These new house threads made me wonder about interesting moves people may have made. They could be good or awful.

My most interesting one was when we moved from one side of a rental house to the other. My thousands of books were in the top floor, and I was able to hand them over to someone on the top floor of the other side, out the window, which eliminated lots of stair climbing. We got neighbors to help move the heavy stuff, and then had a barbecue for them. Moving stuff less than the distance you would to load it into a truck does have some advantages.

What about yours?

This might have been my least interesting move, but I moved two blocks. I didn’t have a car at the time–I had a bicycle. My best friend had a teeny little car. My boyfriend didn’t have a car. Most of my friends didn’t have a car.

I did have a piano.

We moved most of my stuff via shopping cart. When it came time for the piano, we grabbed people off the street and promised them beer. AFTER the piano was moved. So five guys–my boyfriend, two other friends, and two guys off the street–walked my piano two blocks to the new place and then managed to get it up one and a half flights of stairs.

About six months later I moved again. Again, two blocks, but this time two blocks east instead of two blocks north. At this point my boyfriend pointed out that I needed a whole new group of friends on account of the damn piano and I decided that next time I would just buy a house and never move the piano again.

I do kind of miss the days when I could move all my possessions in a couple of trips using a shopping cart.

I moved from my parents’ house at one end of the block to my own house at the other end of the block.

Since I didn’t have much in the way of furniture, I basically moved myself, one suv-full at a time. I also didn’t have a move-out date, so I didn’t need to hurry. On the last day I had my friend come with his truck and we moved my mattress and box spring and dresser.

Kind of sucks because I’ve helped SO many people move - I could have cashed in a ton of favors…if I needed it.

Our house used to border a school parking lot. We moved to the other end of the parking lot. My family did the whole move using a riding mower and a small trailer…except for the piano (a Steinway upright grand). We got some friends to load it on a pickup truck, and several of us hopped in the back to steady it. As we were pulling out, the guy driving told my dad to start playing. He did, and instead of heading straight to the new house, they drove through a bunch of neighborhoods with my dad playing the piano in the back of a pick up.
