Interesting Sequence of Commercials

I was watching TV on Saturday afternoon saw 2 consecutive commercials that made me laugh:

  1. Herzberg diamonds - A man’s hand is shown writing in calligraphy. He is making his own card for his wife/girlfriend and says [paraphrase]:

“I couldn’t find a card nice enough for you, so I decided to make one myself.”

Then the background voice comes on: “Because you’re not THAT guy…”

The point is that most men aren’t as naturally romantic, thus they should just do the easy thing and buy a diamond necklace from Herzberg.

This was followed by:

  1. Guy gives girlfriend something that appears to be a musical dollhouse (I really wasn’t paying attention). She responds: "I used to have one just like it when I was a little girl.

Him: “It’s the same one, I got it from your mother’s house. Open it. There’s more.”

She opens one of the drawers and finds a necklace. That’s it.

I was expecting the “Because you’re not THAT guy…” line. But this one was serious. Unfortunately, I missed the brand, although I think it might be Jared.

Anyway, I just found it noteworthy how Valentine’s Day marketing can vary so much, and still be effective.

I’ve seen this one, but without the “it’s the same one” line. And she got earrings.

You may be right about the earrings. As I said, I really didn’t pay much attention to the details. I was just waiting for the “Because you’re not THAT guy” line, which never came.
