Interior Design, Paint Schemes, and Space Creation

We have an L-shaped room that is due for repainting.

The long portion of the room contains a couch, love seat, chair and TV stand and is used as the living room.

The short portion is used as the dining room/eating area and contains a four-space table with chairs.

My question is: What effect/illusion would be created if we were to paint the walls in the short section a different color than those in the larger section? Would it define the short section as a separate room and therefore create the illusion of more space, or would the opposite be true?

Would the effect depend upon whether the color was darker or lighter in the short section than the long section?

Thanks!

Generally light rooms feel bigger and dark rooms feel smaller. That’s all I got.

Also, warm colors project and cool colors recede. So if you did the short kitchen wall in a yellow/orange hue and used pale blue for the long wall, it would seem more distant.
