Sometimes when there is a severe fracture of a femur, surgeons will insert a rod into the medullary canal to help maintian proper position of the bone while it heals; sometimes the rod is later removed, sometimes it is left in. Can anyone provide a list of pros and cons of leaving the rod in instead of having it removed?
