Anyone have a Creme Catalan recipe? I was obsessed with it one summer in Perpignan but I can’t find a recipe that replicates its greatness. I also had some in Barcelona, but it seemed different to the French version.
You should try the Americans on Chiko Rolls. Pus in a tube. Heavenly.
Any mild flavored, easy melting cheese will do. If you don’t have American Cheese, don’t you have any kind of cheese sold in individually wrapped plastic slices?I know I’ve seen it in many European supermarkets, under a name like “camping cheese,” which was pretty much the same as American cheese. (OK, American process cheese food product. I know there’s deli-style American cheese, which comes in blocks like normal cheese, that they probably use on cheesesteaks, but if Cheez Whiz is traditional, I can’t see any objection to using something similar to Kraft singles.)
We’ve got plenty of processed cheese that comes in plastic wrapped slices here, but it’s not the Traffic Cone Orange or American Cheese. Still, if it’s an acceptable substitute I shall look into using it next time…
You make the lumpia as usual, then brush it with a thin whipped egg mixture and roll in bread crumbs. Then you fry them. It adds a nice texture and crunch.
I’m a little surprised, since my extended family and the other members of the Indonesian church they attended all added bread crumbs to theirs. I wonder if it’s a regional thing?
