I have a friend who just told me someone he knows has very large student loans, but because she has moved out of the country and plans never to return, she believes she can get away (practically, not ethically or legally) with not repaying those loans.
She is from the USA, and currently resides in Australia.
Any idea whether she’s really (practically, not ethically or legally) in the clear? Or is this purely wishful thinking?
I decided to walk away from a (totally unreasonable*) bank in the UK.
They found me in the US via a debt collection agency in New Jersey (I was in Illinois).
Curiously they were very reasonable, and asked for repayment only of the sum owing with no interest and in affordable installments.
I still don’t have a clue how they found me.
*My bank agreed to convert my student overdraft into a loan which I would repay from a job I’d found in the US. Four weeks before I was due to go and when I needed to pay for my flight, they asked if my salary would be paid into a UK bank account. Er, no I replied. Loan withdrawn, pay back your overdraft in full. Immediately. Nice.
