I’ve lately heard radio ads for a service that backs up your hard disk over the internet. Has anyone used such a service? Opinions on it?
thanks
As an IT professional, there is only one you want. It is Mozy.com. It is free for reasonably sized backups and $5 a month for unlimited storage which is crazy cheap. Beware that the first backup may take a very long time depending on your connection. 40 GB took about 5 days for me because typical upload speeds are slow. That isn’t much of a problem because it runs in the background and restarts if needed but just be warned. My nightly backups only backup changed files and that only take a few minutes in the middle of the night. Restores are easy and web based.
I tried Norton/Symantec, but it screwed up badly. It backed up my data, but could not let me view it or restore it. Nor could it be set to incrementally backup or overwrite previous backups, which led to insanely long backups and my account running out of space very quickly. Then it would not permit backed up data to be dumped so as to free up space. The wait on the phone for service technicians was over six hours on two occasions, the service technicians promised to return my calls but never did, and ultimately the problems could not be fixed. The only thing that worked out was Norton/Symantec giving me a full refund. Needless to say, with such crap being sold as if it were supposed to work, and support that is worse than useless, I will never purchase anything from Norton/Symantec again.
Thanks. I’ll try it. Looks to be exactly what I need.
Seconded.
Thirded, it rocks.
I intalled it yesterday, and it is working smoothly . Yay! Thanks again Shagnasty.
