Internet Christmas Shopping Secret For Procrastinators!

If you are like me and are just now thinking about buying a few gifts, I have learned a new internet shopping “trick”…at least new for me.

Everyone knows you can order on-line, but at this late of date, suddenly you have to click the “priority overnight” shipping button that is going to cost you as much as the gift.

I needed to get something for someone in Canada, another in New Zealand, one in Arizona and a couple in Berlin. Shipping would have cost a fortune at this late date.

Instead, I Googled to stores in those locations. Now I have hand made chocolates being delivered (at no charge!) by the local chocolate maker in NZ to my friends who live there, a box set of DVD’s is being delivered by a shop located less than a mile from my brother in Canada (again, no delivery charge and it will be at his doorstep Christmas Eve Day.) And so on…

Somewhat less personal, but even faster…for my niece that I can never figure out what to get, Walmart has e-mail gift certificates! You go to their site, click on gift certificate, pay what you want, they immediately email the gift certificate to whomever you want to send it to. It can then be used instantly at their on-line site.

Maybe these “tricks” aren’t new to some of you, but for people like me who usually go out December 24th and hysterically ransack Walgreens for gifts ("Toothbrushes! Everybody loves toothbrushes as gifts!..Oh look, there are some plastic, wall mounted singing fish!..) - this is a FAR better alternative. Just thought you fellow procrastinators would like to know you still have plenty of time to dawdle. Happy Holidays!

Great ideas! Thanks. I just searched for a way to get a Fred Meyer Dept. store gift certificate for someone in Seattle, and found out I could go to a Ralph’s food store (part of the giant Kroger chain, I guess), and get one there for use at Meyer’s. Happy New Year!

I also just learned that you can give Netflix gift subscriptions! Woohoo!

You arrange for payment and instantaneously get the confirmation, which includes a code. You can print a sheet with the code on it, or forward it in a nice email they send to you. Whomever you give it to can join online and use the code to get their subscription. In other words, you don’t even have to know the mailing address of the person to whom you’re giving it–you can hand-deliver it. Or email it. Or whatever.

And you can give anywhere from 1 month to 1 year. This rocks.

Most of my friends and family have come to get used to me actually getting them their presents in time for Russian New Year!

Whenever I send my mum flowers, I buy them from an online Aussie florist ~ they cost about 50% less due to the favorable exchange rate!

Yipee!

(I should note that she lives in Aus.)
