Can anybody explain to me why on Earth an Internet content filter needs to block language translation sites? Is this to prevent me from learning how to curse my boss in German? I can’t think of any logical reason, and I’ve never gotten an answer when I’ve asked the company that makes the filter software.
This just doesn’t make any sense to me.
I guess the problem are sites like Altavista’s Babelfish that let you translate whole pages. This would give you a backdoor to sites that are blocked otherwise because the origin of the content is obscured.
Originally I wanted to ask to which translation sites you were referring. That way my quote didn’t look that out of place.
Hmmm. That could be it - the filter blocks anonymizer.com, too. Thanks.
Here’s one really bizarre thing about the filter we have here - it blocks the National Football League site (nfl.com), but does not block the individual team sites. Figure that one out. It doesn’t block Major League Baseball, the NBA, or the NHL.
