Internet Explorer Question

Sometimes while playing Java games on the net (yahoo! hearts) I get an alert box saying " you are about to be disconnected, do you wish to remain connected?" And other times I just get disconnected. Why don’t I get this alert every time? I believe I have IE 5, and I have a dial up connection to my ISP.

good question. this has happened to me too. maybe it’s a new hampshire thing. don’t any of you smartypants bastards know the answer ?

I believe Yahoo! kicks you out if your ping gets to high. That is the reason for the message. It’s saying “Hello, have you died?? These people playing in the game with you have all grown beards during this game! Please play a freekin card or we will boot your ass out!”

i don’t think it’s a yahoo thing. the message i sometimes get is “your session has been inactive for twenty minutes, would you like to disconnect now?” yes/no
what canoe is saying is that he gets disconnected without getting the asked. this must be a good question, judging by the lack of response

you should reread your your post before you submit it it

I completely understand your question. Yahoo pings you every so often. If you are inactive for (i believe) 2 minutes the player who owns the table can kick you off his table. Then you are back at the screen showing all the active tables. If Yahoo itself feels your ping is to high, it may also disconnect you without advanced warning.

Your message involving “Your session has been active for 20 minutes / would you like to disconnect” is from your ISP. That is the time limit they have set for inactive accounts, each ISP has its own limit.

The main question here involves kennycanoe’s earlier statement/question -

Is this Yahoo! that is asking if you want to stay connected or your ISP? If its your ISP then you may have been inactive for 20 minutes and then it would ask you “Do you want to stay connected?” Some ISPs auto disconnect you after a certain amount of time, usually 2 hours. This is their way to combat ‘ping programs’. These programs auto ping sites to fool the ISP into thinking you are surfing when you are not even near your computer.

I truly hope this isnt aimed at me.

Here’s a SWAG from me, it sounds like it’s your ISP timing your online activity, and when it doesn’t detect any for a while, it will boot you off. The inconsistency would be an issue of the ISP, and may vary depending on which particular server you get when you dial in.

It may only be timing on web (port 80) accesses, so it’s conceivable that the java applet is using another port which your ISP is not detecting as activity.

To try to combat getting disconnected, you might want to open another browser window in the background, on a page that refreshes every few minutes. I believe some on weather.com will do this, as will most sites that have webcams (but those will also hog your bandwidth).

INTERNET in the control panel if I remember that’s where it is, has a setting to disconnect you if you aren’t doing anything for X minutes.

My ISP software does too.

There is a section of Internet Options in Windows that will disconnect you if you are idle for 20 minutes (default). Check it to see if it is enabled.

Go to control panel/internet options/connections.

Click on your dial-up connection, then click on the “settings” button. A settings panel appears for that connection.

In the section in the bottom third of the panel, click on the “advanced” button.

A panel titled “Advanced Dial-Up” appears. Note there is a line reading “disconnect if idle for __ minutes” with a check box on its right (default is 20 minutes). Clear the check box if it is checked.

thanks zgystardust, my 20 minute box was checked
no absoul that comment wasn’t for you, just slamming myself for making mistakes

Speaking of Yahoo!Games, I used to try playing chess there, but every single damn time I played, I got booted. That counted as a loss for me.

WTF? WTF?!?!?!

You mean you get to kick over the chessboard and I lose? You call that “chess”?

Fucking pricks.

So you’re saying that “ping” means that if I don’t make a move within two minutes, I lose? What kind of idiot new rule is this? There was no such rule when I learned to play chess on a real board.

Chess Federation rules say you have something like an half-hour to make a move, or something. If you agree before the game starts to restrict the time for a move to as little as two minutes, or whatever, that’s called “speed chess” and it’s a special set of rules, and you have to agree on that before starting to play, not trick the opponent into thinking that regular rules apply.

I totally avoid Yahoo!Games now. The whole thing is infested through and through with cheaters.
