Can any of you whizz kids out there tell me why my server keeps on disconnecting…sometimes as many as 5 or 6 times in an hour.
This is very, nay, extremely bloody annoying especially if I am playing chess in real time as my clock continues ticking down, I lose time and have lost games through this.
I have e-mailed my server but all I get back is a standard reply which does not address the question.
If I try to phone them there is never any answer other than some damned auto voice telling me to e-mail them with my problems/questions.
Email them and request their list of all possible dialup access numbers, and you can try other ones manually…they don’t like to do this (no idea why), but it helped me when I was ‘freeserving’. (ahhhhh broadband )
You might also want to get BT to check your line - ordinary line noise won’t usually cause a connection to drop (but it will affect negotiated connection speed and actual bandwidth), but other types of line faults might well cause a modem to hang up, even if the fault is not noticeable at all for voice calls.
FWIW-I was having intermittent disconnects and determined that the power supply fan wasn’t doing its job. Replaced same and the modem card is happy again.
i don’t know what system you are using but if it is 98 or earlier right click on your dial up connection icon under the dial up networking folder, and make sure the “disconnect when idle” option is not enabled. By default i think it is set to disconnect after only a few minutes of inacvtivity.
Windows me and newer doesnt have this option enabled by default.
Thinking about it, there may be an option in internet explorer also that does this under the connections tab, settings…
I don’t even own a modem right now or I would check for you.
One thing that is important about this “feature” is that it does not go by activity of the connection but rather how long it as been since your mouse moved. This makes it a real problem when trying to download something unattended.
