Internet Explorer Trouble

I recently downloaded Internet Explorer 6.0, and am having troubles. Every website I visit loades under western european encoding. And the only way to fix it is for me to manually select '‘user defined’ encoding. Every time. Every site. I’ve looked for a way to permanently fix the problem, but can’t find any. Could someone please help me? I realize I’m showing my computer ignorance with this, but I don’t care. I’m not too proud to beg. Help?

What is your “native” encoding (or language)?
Does this also happen at sited that worked before?

If the encoding for a page is not set explicitly (and often it isn’t) than the setting of the web server is used and the default for that is ISO-8859-1 or “Western European (ISO)” as IE calls it, unless someone configured it otherwise.

These pages for example are supposed to be in Western European ISO (set in the header of the page.)

Choose Tools–>Options from the menu. Near the bottom of the General Tab is a language button. Click that and see what language is the default. Add/Move the one you prefer to the top and see if that helps.
