I feel that the missing ingredient in the internet is depth. Currently everthing seems one dimensional and flat. There are no sensations except for music, spoken word, graphics and text. I hope that I am around when this whole experience matures.
None of the attributes you listed are inherent capabilities of the Internet and there is no reason “depth” couldn’t be added to sites within the limitations of bandwidth and display devices. The internet existed long before web browsers.
Well, I am just shocked–absolutelyshocked!–that the Internet is available only with “no sensations except for music, spoken word, graphics and text”. Anything with just those 4 options is completely “one dimensional and flat”, it has no depth at all.
Could you imagine trying to use some form of information/entertainment exchange medium with only one of those options? And, hey, what if it wasn’t even on a screen? What if it was on some kind of wood pulp? Wouldn’t that just take the cake? It’d be completely unusable, wouldn’t it?
This isn’t a question, but I can clearly see your problem its time you started doing a lot more psychedelic drugs or a lot less depending on your situation.
Perhaps you need add those ingredients to your personal web experience–immerse all your senses in browsing. All you really need is a can of Cheese Whiz. Feel the monitor as you massage it with the processed cheese product. Taste the cheesy goodness as you lick the monitor clean. Smell the burning goop as it fries your monitor.
As my brother says (in response to Kraft), “Cheese! It’s the Cheesiest!”
what are you looking for then? Sences of touch, smell, and taste too. If you haven’t noticed the intenet is based on computers and computers can only out put graphics, text, and sound. If yours can do more I would like to know the brand name and how much it cost so I can get one. The internet can only do what a computer can do. So when you have a computer that can give you a full virtual reality experience you can connect it to the internet and poof people with a computer that can do the same things yours can do will be able to have a rich and fulfilling experience too.
Apparently insider doesn’t have one of Sony’s new 3-d monitors. I love mine. Coupled with the new Microsoft 3Dmax software, I can view pictures in 3 dimentions, and actually move “through” websites, rather than just viewing it from the front.
Having my CPU hooked up to the surround processor on my stereo also helps, especially on the web pages that have cute little MIDI files playing the whole time.
yeah, that’s what they said to Gutenberg when he invented the printing press: “What makes you think this would be any good? I mean all you can do is print text and most people can’t read anyway. And the quality of the drawings is lousy… I mean if you could have realistic photos of nude women that might be something but this press of yours is crap. You expect people to learn to read just so you can use your press? You better go back to the drawing board and invent radio or TV so people can watch it with no effort on their part!”
