I vote “comedy option”, maybe a little shorter on top. And I don’t think you’d find the everyday styling too excessive, though you’d have to keep getting it cut every month or so.
I’d be glad to give an opinion on your glasses frames (something less rectangular more square I think), but I bet the person at the glasses shop could do that also.
How does it compare to Mike Mills’ facial hair? You’ll note his is different colored than his hair.
If you DO go with something more like his…sorta long and feathered…I think you would need to grow facial hair too. Otherwise you might look too girly. I think a goatee would look great on you though.
I like your idea of going half short and chopping off more if needed.
You need to show us what your hair looks like out of a pony tail, too.
Let me be the first to say that I think the glasses are fine, and they look right nerdy, which I dig. But I am possibly the last person you want to take fashion advice from unless you want me to tell you how you can look more like a 90’s rocker or a nerd. I don’t pay attention to too many other types of guys
First, I have to say your hair is absolutely gorgeous. I agree that if you take color to it, it would be an utter travesty! I am inclined to say to cut it all off, but only because then it might be donatable and again, you have spectacular hair. I think your best bet is to work into shorter hairstyles gradually. Tell the stylist to make it short enough that you CAN’T put it into a pony tail and then figure out the style together. In general, you will have to spend more time with product / styling if your hair is not being pulled back, however most products now are based on the methods of rub hands together, apply and muss. That is how I do my hair and I’m a girl. I little silk therapy ran through tames the flyaways and I’m out the door. Having a style does not necessarily mean having to work on it too much.
I hadn’t thought of the shock of going from long hair to super-short - I just like super-short hair on guys. Maybe you could ask the stylist to sort of go for a seventies shag hair cut - everyone in the seventies seemed to have plenty of length, even without having long hair. Here ya go - here’s a nice mid step between long and short hair. (Actually, that might not be a bad cut for you.)
I’ll go ahead and vote for the short Cat Whisperer hair. I’ve never been a big fan of longer hair on guys- for every 10 that have it, it works on maybe 1 or 2. Try the short cut. If you don’t like it, you can grow it out, but I think it’s important to step outside of your comfort zone on this one and give it a go.
Also, I’d rock the thick-frame glasses too. They’re just about universally-flattering on everyone, and make you look more intellectual, to boot!
I liked the look it had while going back to my ponytail, and thought the tassle effect of all that hair looked cool. Yeah, apparently I don’t know much about style
Oh wow, even shorter? I was googling mens’ styling products last night and found that mousse (had to google for spelling) may be an OK fit for me. I’ll keep considering the short for now, as people seem to like it.
Someone would have to bring Guy Fieri into this…to me, that is LONGER that Cat’s and my comedy option. I actually never though about his hair, and I DO really like that style…how would it look with WTF-blond hair like mine? I don’t even know what to call his hair color.
I’m so unobservant. I never even noticed the facial hair before. I am actually about to ask this - is a goatee a variable term referring to some amount of hair under the curve of your lower lip extending to your chin? I’ve seen goatees that are just the stripe of hair (landing strip-esque) and others that are a whole corner-of-mouth-to-corner beards. I could probably do something like bottom of chin to halfway between chin and bottom lip or something. I still think this hairstyle (mike mills) is the best (in the picture with him holding the award), and cutting it shorter, but this massive wave of people liking super short hair is making me reconsider. Maybe I should poll to see who here is a girl and weight opinions as such
You asked for the horror of me with my hair down - enjoy it. I brushed it down, but this is straight out of a pony tail. Remember that I’m taking these for the internet and no matter how bad they look, I don’t wear my hair like this in public :smith:
Let me know if you need better pictures.
Like I said (did I?) I’m a computer science major who has monty python’s meaning of life on my screen right now and I’m quoting along with it, so looking nerdy is EXACTLY what I want (my dating profile #2 turn on is someone with a higher initiative than me). I plan to find glasses that are rectangular, maybe with really short vertical lines. Thick and black is most likely, but a thin frame is still in the mix. I would also KILL to be able to look like Gaius Baltar
I’ve also been told to try out
, which looks alright.
Please let your name be a play on the penguin! Like I said above, I looked into styling product, and mousse looks easy to apply. Silk Therapy is what you use for flyaways? It is humid as hell in Texas and my flyaways go nuts in the summer.
I like that one, though it seems sort of long now that I’m getting used to the idea of short. I bet you’d like Baltar’s haircut (above).
I know I’m a scardy cat about cutting it short. I also know it’s just hair and will grow back. I need to be pushed a bit outside that comfort zone, and I appreciate all the advice. To everyone in the thread, thanks for the input so far. I’ve got an appointment for Wed this coming week to get it cut, so I’ll keep jumping from idea to idea up to that point.
If you do think you might want to donate your hair (there are a couple of charities that make wigs for children with medical conditions that cause them to lose hair, or for adults who lost their hair because of chemotherapy), be sure to say so when you go to get it cut. I’ve done this four times so I’m a big expert. First, some salons will cut your hair for free if you’re donating it. Some will also take care of mailing your hair in to the charity for you, while others will just give you the hair in a bag to mail yourself. But the important thing is that they know to start by chopping your hair off in a ponytail instead of cutting bit by bit. (They’ll even it up and give you an actual hairstyle after the big chop.) You can’t just donate a bunch of loose hair, it has to be in a ponytail or braid. The minimum length requirement varies depending on the charity, but it’s usually 10-12 inches.
Oh, and if they do give you the hair to mail yourself, do NOT remove the rubber band NO MATTER WHAT. I did that once and it was a disaster. It was a Humpty Dumpty situation where there was no way that hair was going back into a neat ponytail. Luckily I’d had my hair cut off in two sections so one was still fine to donate, but the other wound up a softball sized hairball.
The pony tail is dated and that’s coming from an old fart. As nice as some of the suggestions are I think people should reread the post. “Hot sweaty summer in Texas” is part of the equation. I’m thinking short and spiky which gives you options for different occasions. You can comb it straight back or spike it in different designs (top, top & sides).
OK guys, it looks like there is a consensus here. I’m planning on showing my stylist the following images (Guy Fieri will be suggested to have shorter side hair). I’m still not going for a few days, but most everybody is saying short on the sides. long on top. How short are these sides going to end up inch-wise? Would it make any difference in my overall ‘fastion statement’ to get a haircut or glasses first? (see above posts for my idea of stylish glasses)
I’ve crossposted this on nine other forums, and this one is the most responsive. I’ve even been on style and fashion boards (which rip me for not being in shape). I’ve never heard of this place, but ten internets for all of you.
What, I can’t edit my posts? Really? I just looked up what this forum is, and I got “Cecil Adams’ weekly question and answer column message boards.” I looked up Cecil Adams and found that it is a Q&A column in the US and Canada. Does that mean everyone here is in that area? You’re the 656th biggest forum on the internet in terms of people, and the 117th in terms of posts. You guys are a big help.
