Int'l Travel - Health Insurance

Generally speaking, do health insurance policies cover you while travel abroad?

I would read the fine print - then buy travel insurance - including evacuation coverage.

I know a woman who had a ‘cardiac event’ while on a cruise in the South Pacific. She was airlifted off the ship and flown back to the PacNW from NZ, at outrageous expense, but it was covered by her travel policy.

You will need to contact your insurance company to see exactly what is covered under your policy. You’ll also want to know whether the insurance company would pay any medical expenses up front, or expect you to pay and then reimburse you once you return to your home country (with the necessary documentation and receipts to verify your claim, of course).

And you’ll definitely need medical evacuation coverage in addition to regular insurance coverage, so plan on buying that separately. Medical evacuation can cost tens of thousands of dollars, so don’t skip this!
