Overseas insurance for 3 months

My daughter (Beta-chan for those who remember, now 16 years old!) is going to Germany on a student exchange for three months.

I’m looking online for insurance for her, and have found a range of quotes from $170 to $350.

Does anyone have any experience with this type of insurance? Any recomendations?

Health insurance, I am assuming?

If so, while I have not ever had to use it myself, my client (a health insurance company) offers it. One thing that I know you’ll want to understand about the policies, in addition to what they cover in Germany, is how they handle transporting her back to the U.S. if she becomes seriously ill.

It looks like there is travel health insurance, which covers some travel insurance as well as health insurance.

We live in Japan, but there is the same concern about transporting her home if she becomes seriously ill.

Medical evacuation back to your own country is pretty standard in all travel insurance policies, mainly because it saves the insurer money. As long as you’re abroad, they have to cover your health costs; as soon as you get home they are off the hook — your ongoing treatment is a matter for you/your country’s health system/your domestic insurer. So they are highly motivated to get you home as soon as possible, even if your medical needs mean that the journey home will be relatively expensive.

By all means check, before you buy a policy. But you are very unlikely to find a policy that doesn’t include this.
