Ok, let’s get local with this shit. It’s much more entertaining. The obvious pissing contest is between BC and Ontario (where I was born and raised, and where I live, respectively). I’ll take the pro-BC side, but there are reasonable points to be made for either.
The beer in Ontario fucking blows. I didn’t really notice it until I went back to BC in April, but really. They fucking suck.
The weather in Ontario: too cold in the winder, too hot in the summer. People say, “well at least Ontario has four seasons”. Fuck that! Two of them suck, and BC has the other two!
I thought BC teenagers were a bunch of dumbassed strutting thugs, but man, Toronto, can we just airlift Yonge street to Greenland?
Vancouver’s one of the few cities its size or larger that I know of that doesn’t have a highway running through its core. The traffic sucks, but AFAIAC, cranky commuters can go fuck themselves. I’d rather live in a cleaner, better looking city.
Good place to mention that it was a strange juxtaposition, my completely tongue-in-cheek posting about seceding from the CSA and a thread closing dealing with nation bashing.
[Snap] “I’ve got the power!” [/S]
P.S. Georgia sucks. That’s why the St. Johns River flows north.
I forgot to bitch about the eat-the-poor, right-wing assholes who run Ontario, and the shamefully poor relationship that the police force has with the citizens.
As an ex-British-Columbian, I have to say, How does someone in Gordon Campbell’s province say that with cracking up laughing?
As for the the police in BC (or at least Vancouver), I have two words: “starlight drive.” I had the misfortune of witnessing the police threaten a friend of mine with this – for the heinous crime of cruising his beat partner.
The one thing I can say about your OP is that didn’t start with the sort of automatic, abuse-the-French stupidity I see in most Canada-bashes-Canadians threads.
I’d like to associate myself with my colleague’s remarks. Whenever I hear some ninnyhammer spout off about 25% of the country without knowing a single thing about it, I always think, “So how long have you been a sovereignist? You obviously don’t believe francophones are Canadian either!”
You have a good point about Gordo, but at least Vancouver has a left-wing municipal government.
Can you explain the “starlight drive” thing to me? I know that the cops don’t do so well with the gay community in either Vancouver or Toronto.
Stupid frenchie
You’re right about the negativity on Canada Day, and I plan on celebrating tonight (because for me at least, life is great in Canada), but without a healthy dose of criticism with your patriotism, you drift in the direction of the stereotypical Jingoistic American.
I found an interesting article awhile back – when the Vancouver police were under heavy scrutiny for their handling of the missing women’s cases – and “starlight drives” came to public attention for the first time. However, that article’s long since fallen off the edge of cyberspace.
Basically, they involve the police driving some person they don’t like out into the middle of nowhere on a cold night, and abandoning them there to get back to town on their own. The victim is usually a minority, often native. In this case, he was gay.
True – but I’ve never been shy about talking about problems in Canada. I think I’ve posted quite a bit about racism and homophobia in this country, as well as the “eat-the-poor” types.
But then patriotism in this country has never been about flags or symbols or anthems, really. It’s a certain approach to life, to society, to thinking about the larger issues, if that makes any sense.
Yeah, La-la-land’s a nice place. When it isn’t raining. I mean, some months, you get to see the sun.
Canadian beer blows in general. Lots of good microbreweries though. Frankly Kokanee and Wildcat both taste like crap.
Vancouver’s a pretty city, and all the people from BC living in Toronto say this often. But many don’t want to go back.
Anyhoo, it’s Canada Day, so I’m just going to have a few drinks and drive around until the cops nab me. For my money, the nicest people in Canada are from Saskatchewan or out east. Ontario folks are friendlier than the smug and complacent BC folks, though. W.O. Mitchell was right.
“Right-wing”? Is this an Ontario in some other universe? Ontario’s government is spending money like there’s no tomorrow and supports every current, fashionable cause there is.
It wasn’t Ontario that bitched about the same-sex-marriage ruling.
Erm, starlight drive? That’s a threat I’m not familiar with. As I assume you don’t mean a romantic drive at night in an open topped car, any chance you could elaborate. Ta.
That was my first thought also: a B.C. resident hacking away at another province for a right-wing government? Give me a break. Sure, you’ve recently elected a social democratic municipal government, but B.C. will continue to suffer Gordon Campbell for a while yet.
That aside, Vancouver is one of my favourite cities in the world. I was born there, and i’ve spent quite a bit of time there, and if can end up living there i’ll be very happy.
