And this is in no way comparable. No one called Prince by his symbol because there was no way to pronounce it. As to Drake Bell, he’s said he’d always call her Bruce, not that he’d just remember her that way. But I’m sure you know both those things.
People sometimes pretend to get married for love, but are actually doing it for a green card, or some other fraud, or just doing it for financial reasons. If someone in your office said they were getting married would you interrogate their reasons for doing so, or would you wish them congratulations?
I don’t cause I’m not so wrapped up in this as to memorize the exact lines. I was only passing aware that Drake had said something along those lines.
And you’re dissembling cause you know damn well that tons of people thought Prince was being ridiculous, and tons of people said…"Uhh…no. I’ll call him Prince, and not even “The artist formerly known as Prince”* and I don’t recall a single person called an asshole for doing so.
Prince kind of was doing it to be ridiculous, though. The name change wasn’t born out of a deep seated identity issue, it was a dodge to get out of a shitty recording contract.
So my sister is an asshole?
My sister is two and a half years older. Since I can remember, she has been going by her middle name rather than her first name. She just decided at a very early age that she didn’t like her first name. IANALawyer, but I think she’s been using it on enough licenses, bills, etc to legally constitute a name change.
On The Subject Of Immediately Switching Pronouns
The trans folk I’ve known have lived hard lives. It harms me in no way to use their preferred pronoun. It generally causes them emotional harm to use the wrong one. Since the evidence (I’m sure somebody can post a cite faster than I can find mine) points to the human brain being gender dimorphic and to the brain’s sex not always aligning with chromosomes, genitalia etc, it is not a question of whether trans folk exist. It is a question of whether a particular individual is trans. In the long term, I leave that to their therapist to determine. In the short term, if somebody want to be called she or he, why shouldn’t I respect their wishes?
I have a friend from college who decided she was tired of her first name (“Roberta”) and chose to start using her middle name. I went to a party and mentioned some college hijinks and it took a while for all her work friends to know who I was talking about. (And thereafter, I remembered to call her by the right name.) No big deal.
I have to say, I used to think there were few people I’d think less of than Kim Kardashian-West and Kanye West. This thread and its predecessors have certainly turned that around!
She is still at the bottom of my list, ever since she wanted Reign and North baptized in Jerusalem, and wanted it to be by someone named John, since Christ was baptized by a John.
I agree with this!
While I think it’s great he’s taken action toward his true self and all, I too have my doubts that this isn’t just another KarDash/Jenner stunt to elbow your way onto the airwaves. That’s what this clan is. all. about.
Also, since he is making this more than just public, he’s sharing the transformation with us like we’re best friends and all, I’d like the details: Is he getting his wang split into a camel toe? I want to know all about his upcoming sex life. Details, please! None of this, “I’m a total attention whore who’s pimping out my transformation, but certain questions are disrespectful”. Own it.
AND, when the ratings start to slip, don’t be surprised when he decides it was all a huge mistake due to…? and the NEW TRANSFORMATION show begins with his reassignment back to a man.
You heard it here first folks!
when Bruce legally changes his name to Caitlyn, we’ll talk. So far all of this stuff is predicated on us just being so super senitive and super coddling to his/her delicate constitution. So far, he is legally a man and legally Bruce. As of right now, we have the punkrock emo girl screaming “THIS IS WHO I REALLY AM NOW, MOM” and we’re all just expected to play along, no questions asked.
Which is ludicrous.
Here’s a better example: Metta World Peace. Artest changes his name, and it’s RIDICULOUS what he picked, but hey–he legally changed his hame.
During the playoff series against the Thunder, he hurt James Hardin, antics we all expect from Artest/Peace, and suddenly the on-air announcers are calling him “Artest” again. “Let’s be clear, here people–,” they started. “–This is Ron Artest being Artest, and I refuse to pretend he’s a better person now that he’s simply changed his name.”
Are they assholes? Are they just sooo disrespectful we should make a whole thing of it? No. You don’t care–none of you care. Because it’s not involving some kind of knee-jerk social issue of which we all feel it so prudent to accept whole-cloth.
Bruce Jenner was an ego-maniacal selfish idiot who has been capitalizing on fame for the sake of fame for years. Now that same bad person decides to be a woman, and we are all expected to fawn over how brave and amazing SHE suddenly is. The math doesn’t even make sense.
World Peace is still the asshole Artest, only he at least LEGALLY changed his name before we were expected to call him that. When people get grumpy and don’t want to call him that anymore, no one really cares.
This is why I am relentless on this issue. No one cares about the actual principle involved, everyone just feels so reactionary because it’s a sensitive social issue so everyone just immediately jumps on-board whole hog, no questions asked.
Makes no sense.
he is not and has officially stated he has no intention to. This, of course, doesn’t preclude him from being “a woman,” but it certainly affords him the option to be a man later (if he so chooses).
Pretty sure that’s not why.
dontbesojumpy, maybe people are just more sensitive to transgenders than they used to be. Why be a jerk about someone wanting to be known as their preferred name and gender? Why be a jerk about that person wanting to use the bathroom of their preferred gender? Why be a jerk at all about it? People are becoming more understanding about this issue these days and those who refuse to at least be tolerant are rightly being called on the carpet for it
care to expand on your vague assertion? Or does your courage end there?
care to disassemble my point about Metta World Peace? where is the moral outrage at people referring to him as “Artest” in a derogatory manner? why is not not cause of social alarm?
i think if Artest became Metta because he transformed into a woman, you’d all have super strong opinions about anyone ever calling him “artest” again, especially when it is used to indicate he has not changed a person. But since he remains a man, it’s not really an issue to you.
Jesus. These people are more concerned with something that does not affect them than I am with things that do. Since this ain’t the pit, the most generous thing I can say is it’s surreal.
Why do you care?
Why? Why do you care? Why should any of us care what you think on this subject?
that’s a fantastic question, which is why i’m really unsure why it bothers you all so much i am calling a man legally named Bruce a “he.” i’m pretty sure you you want to pretend it’s transphobia or something sinister, when really it’s just a LITERAL matter of ACTUAL semantics.
i mean, i’m just following what the man asked of the media himself. why are you all getting so bent out of shape over it?
why do you care if i care? why do you care THAT i care?
Not in this forum.
