Invisible Fence relocation

We had an Invisible Fence (IF) in Ohio. We are moving to NY. Our new house has an IF already. We need to have the IF person come out, probably move the wire, set it up, re-flag the boundary and re-train the dog.

The problem is my husband doesn’t not want to spend any money on it.

How much could it possibly cost? Does anyone have an idea so I can tell the man “It’s going to cost @ $100. Big deal” ??

(I won’t be in NY until August so he needs to do this.)

Oh, I contacted the company near our new town and the person was vague about the cost.

No idea about cost, but couldn’t you turn it on, take the collar around the yard (not on the dog!) and mark the yard yourself to see what you end up with? I’d try this before having someone come out.

He tried that and it doesn’t work. I think it has to be on the same frequency or something. Maybe like a garage door opener?

You need to get the invisible man to move the invisble fence and I hear he can be quite hard to find.

This is true. Hopefully the dog won’t become invisible.

Leave the old wires where they are. Why can’t you use your system and frequency together with the old wires. Mark the location yourself. cost = 0.

Don’t know how to do it.

That’s a problem indeed. It’s then safe to assume that he doesn’t care about losing a pet, or that $3-400 (at worst) is way more important that said pet.

If I were to re-program an alarm system because the owner messed it up or there’s new owners in the building I’d charge $160/hr (I’m in Northern Canada, North of 60, multiply whatever US prices x 3.) And re-programming an alarm system on a private house is a 20 minutes job.

Having said this, clarification needs to be made on whether the invisible fence you have at the new house is the same make / model as the old system and whether it’s compatible with it or not (yes two separate issues.)

sigh. I still can’t get over the fact that he won’t spend money. I’d not hesitate to drop a couple grant or borrow money if I had to and if it was about any of my pets.

Exactly, I agree. It was worth spending @ $1500 in the first place to get the Invisible Fence in OH. Worth every penny for a very active dog.

It’s definitely the same company.

I have emailed him to DO IT before I get there.

Are you bringing the control box and collar from the old house with you? Alternatively, do you have the control box and a collar from the system at the new house? I would think either of those would work, but not necessarily a mix-and-match set up.

Do you know when the system at the new house worked most recently? Can you contact the old owners of the new house? Are you sure the batteries in the collar are still good?

The box that sends out the signals has to match the collars it is designed to work with, but the the wire in the ground is literally just wire. If you take the old box from the old house and connect it to the wire in the new house it should work with your old collars. You shouldn’t have to buy anything new.

The only reason to move the wire in the new house is if it is in a location you don’t want. Physically digging up wire is fairly labor intensive. I’d expect it to cost quite a bit more than $100.

You will of course have to put down flags and re-train the dog. As was already mentioned, you can carry a collar around and figure out where the flags need to go yourself.
