Ionic Air Purifiers - do they work

I have just moved into a new home and am having a terrible time with allergies. I’m not sure if it is because it is a particularly tough Hay Fever season (I have read that it is) or if it is because the previous owner had a cat (I know that they did) or if it is something else, but life is pretty bad right now. I am thinking about buying an air purifier. A friend has one that does not use a conventional filter but instead is “Ionic.” If any dopers have any experience with one of these, I would sure love to hear about it. Air purifiers are a few hundred dollars and up and so I don’t want to make this purchase lightly.

I am very pleased with my Alpine unit. I think they were bought out by someone else. I have a smaller one in the den and the bigger one in the kitchen. It makes my house smell like it smells after a summer rain…kind of. You know how sheets of the line smell? That is kind of it too. I bought mine because I have three dogs. You can imagine what that could possibly smell like. Even though, we take regular baths and everything, they can get a bit gamee at times. When I was checking out stuff for the second one I bought,I saw lots of info about how it is a hoax or untrue. I think the problem happened because one of the sales guys made some promise related to a medical issue. I do not have allergies so, I can’t speak of my personal experience, but a girl I work with has a three year old with asthma. She bought the same kind of unit I have and she is very pleased with it. We have one in our office at work. The problem with it, if there is one, is that I don’t get around to cleaning the plates as often as I should. But this is due to my negligence. Ha…I should go and clean that thing right now.look and the negative side

Um, 'scuse while I say HA! I believe that Cecil had something to say on this matter. Un momento…

Well, if he does, I can’t find it. Carry on.

Ah, well here’s something that may be related.

Take what you can out of it.

Heh… my dad actually sells those Alpine units. We’ve got a couple in the house, and I gotta admit, there is a lot less dust floating around (it used to be REALLY dusty in our house). I don’t know the specifics, but the basic idea is that the ionization (is that even a word?) causes dust and stuff to be attracted to each other, eventually getting to the point where they get so big that they just fall.

Grelby… keep in mind that Cecil only denies that the “ionic” effect itself doesn’t do anything helpful to the human body… he says nothing about whether it may indirectly do some good.
