My Dell laptop had suddenly began a little popup (from the icons on the bottom right of the screen) that says “IP address conflict with another system on the network.” What is the cause of this and how do I fix it? The Dell is running xp pro, I have a d-link router. Interestingly, my apple Imac G5 was also having all kinds of problems staying connected. My daughter just left with the Dell to go over her friends house, and now the Imac is running great. I assume said conflict is somehow between the laptop and the Imac.
How do you get ip addresses to your machines? The typical home setup these days is to get them via DHCP. The message you are getting is probably because one of those machine is setup with a static IP address.
In windows XP pro you should go to control panel -> networking right click on the network interface either local area or wireless network choose properties. This gets you a window under the general tab select the internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and click on properties. You probably should see two radio boxes. If your dlink box is running DHCP (which it probably is) Obtain and IP address automaticall and Obtain DNS server address automatically should be selected.
Thanks, I will try that. Anyone know how to check this stuff on an Imac G5?
