Is that what most people will actually pay?
Since I have the 4s, another “meh”.
What I do like:
• 16:9 screen ratio. Only makes sense since most HD formatted shows and enough movies use this ratio, so there’s either none, or hardly any, letter boxing and you get a substantially bigger picture because of it.
• I like the new connector. Rubust and invertible. So you can get an adapter, or just use the cable it comes with anyway. These things happen all the time, if not even more waywardly than other manufacturers.
• Although, this is really an iOS 6 feature, I just wanted to mention I got to play with the new Maps app that ousted the Google Maps app. It is actually pretty cool. The Google Map app did as much as this does, but now it gives you turn by turn and 3D buildings. Looks nice.
the sRGB gamut of the Retina Display, as implemented on the “New” iPad (iPad 3). Much more range in color and saturation. Quite noticeably vivid and striking. Compare the two gamuts of the old iPad and the new one, and you’ll see a much wider range, and really close alignment in the sRGB color space.
• A 2x (IIRC) faster processor… never hurts.
Otherwise, not enough to get me to jump over from my 4s until maybe next year.
Don’t take these things for granted though. Think about what these tiny things can actually do. Next big jump will probably be some sort of haptic screen tech. Someone may do it first, but Apple usually doest it right.
Sony’s done it.

Haptic feedback would make me jump out of my seat and start the queue right now - that’s as big a revolution as the original iPhone was! Probably not within the forseeable future, though.
And anyway, I’m upgrading from the 4, not the 4s - I usually skip the "s"s. 2 years is fine for a phone. Actually, the iPhone 4 is holding up a lot better than the 3G did - the 3G was pretty crap by the time the 4 came around, but this time the 4 is still working pretty good.
Still upgrading though.
Oh, I agree. It’s years off, but one of those technologies that’s probably inevitable, and would be another big jump in mobile computers/tablets on par with the iPhone.
Other than that, in 5 years, they, and the industry, has pretty much reached another plateau in mobile devices. I can’t really think of anything on the near horizon that would really turn the world’s head in this area. Even a 3D screen? Ehhh. So long as it didn’t sacrifice their display quality for it. Even then, not anything to get me excited (and I’m a stereoscopy fan).
Then sue for patent infringement. (Couldn’t resist.)
Are you guys talking about a different haptic feedback than what I’m thinking about? I don’t know how I’d like typing without it, because keeping the keyboard sound on would make me crazy. Other functions give feedback too, it’s nice to have that without annoying sounds as acknowledgement from the phone.
Saying it’s years away, are you talking about feedback from music or video or something?
That had me puzzled too. Haptic feedback on touchscreen keyboards is commonplace. What are the iFolks talking about?
I had haptic feedback on my Droid Incredible two years ago, and now on my Droid Incredible 4G.
I think so. That’s the price for the smallest memory with a contract.
I bought mine last night. It took me four or five minutes using the Apple Store ap on my iPhone 4.
Thanks. I missed this post, but had no problem pre-ordering it a few minutes ago (8:35 CDT) from Apple’s website.
Since my current phone is a 3GS, I’ll probably upgrade to the 5. I hope the next generation of iPad comes with the same connector, though; I currently have one of the original iPads, so that needs to be updated, too - and I’d prefer to have both devices running off the same charger, it makes travel packing a lot simpler.
Are you getting yours on 9/21? Some sites are reporting that the first ship date has sold out and it’s now a two week wait.
Yes, I waited up until midnight to get one but I am no Apple boy. I have never owned an iPod or any other music storage device. I have bought, IIRC, three desk tops and two lap tops in my life for personal use and all of them have been PCs and all future ones will probably be PCs. While the Apples may be better, they are not enough better to justify paying triple the price or even 20% more for me. There is nothing that I use a PC for that can’t be done fine on a cheap PC.
This will be my third iPhone. I get a new one every two years at launch for $200 which I can easily afford. As I said earlier, the Android OS has weak security (I asked one of the IT guys and he said something about authentication that I didn’t understand) so it’s a non-starter for me. I think that we can all agree that Blackberries suck so I am left with no choice if I want a smartphone.
Not the person to whom you posed the question, but I ordered one through AT&T about two hours ago (8:30 AM, Central) and they gave me a September 21 ship date. Perhaps it’s because I went for the 64 gb model, which may not be selling as well as the lower memory versions.
CNN is reporting that the pre-sale sold out in an hour (it took 22 hours for the 4S) and that dates given by the carriers for phones ordered after that time may not reflect reality. Not sure if I totally believe that though. I ordered through Apple and it was placed 43 minutes after launch.
I meant stuff like this. http://news.discovery.com/tech/haptic-touchscreen-120606.html
Not just vibrations when typing.
I thought that and got an android phone as it was cheaper than the iphone contract.
It is just not true. Android sucks because Apple seem to have patented all the sensible ways of operating touch screens. Not to mention the huge difference in quality and range of apps (who all suffer from the same inbuilt interface issues).
I’m upgrading to an iphone next time. The apple interface just works. Android is a frustrating wrestling match.
Question about 3D maps - I get the impression the whole map will be 3D, but looking at the keynote it looks like only certain buildings and their surroundings will be in 3D. Does anyone know which is the case?
I ordered about 20 minutes after launch through Apple, as well. I got the 32gb version and it’s set for a 9/21 delivery.
I got the second ship date, with an estimated delivery of 10/2. That works okay for me.
