Iphone application sound when phone is on silent.

I bought myself an iPhone 3g today and have been downloading applications a plenty from iTunes.

I just had one question though, even when I switch the phone onto silent, certain applications will still play sound when I go onto them. Is there anyway to ensure the applications sounds will turn off too when I put the phone onto silent? i just don’t want to be the anti social noise maker on public transport or get caught playing games when I should be working

I have checked the settings but the only option I can see relating to silent is whether I want the vibrate function or not.

Thank you in advance

I trust that when you say you “switched the phone onto silent” that you used the silent switch on the side of the device, and not the silent function in the phone settings menu. If so, sorry I don’t know.

Once you flip the switch on the upper left side, everything should be silent. Putting it on vibrate will only silence the ringer. If you’re flipping the switch, then what app is still making sound?

Yes, I am flipping the top left switch and the little symbol shows that it has been switched onto silent. I have tried a few applications but the two that I’ve currently left on my phone are the games Cooking Mama and Sally’s Salon, both of which have obnoxious music even on silent. There were also other applications I played with then deleted after about 2 minutes that did the same. I know the easy solution would be just not to use those applications when I don’t want to be heard but just seemed strange that the silent function doesn’t seem to include the applications.

Just struck me as strange really.

You’ll have to turn the sound down with the rocker switch on the side. The switch is just for the ringer. This is a good thing because otherwise my alarm clock wouldn’t work.

I was going to try them on my phone but they aren’t free. The switch silences everything on mine (except ipod, alarm etc which I wouldn’t want it to silence). I tried a game that plays music and when the switch is flipped, the music goes off. But apparently apps can ignore it and continue to make noise.

I guess the only solution, if it becomes a problem, would be to plug in your earphones for those apps.
