I’m listening to KXLU 88.9 Los Angeles on my office computer. A coworker said she liked it, and found it on the Radio USA app on her Android phone. That sounded pretty good, so I downloaded one of the Radio USA apps on my iPhone. It’s not the same one my coworker has.
If you have a radio app, and you’re on an iPhone, can you see if you can find KXLU and advise me if I should download the app?
I use Tunein on my Iphone. You can sometimes add stations that don’t show up on Tunein’s list but that doesn’t always work.
If you go to the station’s website you’ll sometimes find out there’s another app they recommend for listening over the internet. This may have to do with contracts/licensing/etc.
Anecdote: I use to use Tunein to listen to local London UK news via LBC News. One day, it disappeared and wasn’t available on Tunein. Eventually, I went to LBC’s website and discovered a specific app they created to listen LBC News over the internet. I downloaded that and now I can listen M25 traffic chaos from the comfort of my California home…
I just downloaded Radio.net, found KXLU on it, and got it to play. It looks like Radio.net has a “prime” (ad-free) version of their app, but I’m not sure if it’s a monthly fee or a one-time fee. Anyway, it streams the station you want, but it appears that you get an ad that Radio.net inserts every so often (much like Spotify or Pandora without a subscription).
TuneIn is free, and yes, I can get KXLU on it. It costs $10 a month only if you get the premium service, which promises live blackout-free sports and commercial-free radio. But the basic TuneIn app doesn’t cost anything. If you get a popup urging you to subscribe or start a free trial, click the “X” on the top right and it goes away.
I was doing this at the office, but when I tried to play it I got a screen that said [paraphrasing] ‘Start your 7-day free trial. After the trial, it’s only $9.95 per month!’ I’ll have to revisit it.
I’m a little confused about what it is you want. Are you looking for an app with lots of radio streams, or do you just want to play KXLU on your iPhone? If it’s the latter, just tell your iPhone “Hey Siri, play KLXU.” That will work with a lot of stations.
On the drive into work this morning I said, ‘Siri, play KXLU.’ And she did! I’ve never asked Siri for anything before. Usually I just click the hold button until the phone is listening, and then ask the phone.
