iPhone revisit...

Okay, so I have had the iPhone for a month now and in that time some other questions have popped up. In the beginning when I first got it, as you can see from this thread, I was completely lost or annoyed with some features. Now that time has passed I have a few more questions.

First off the bubbles when it comes to text messaging, isn’t bothering me nearly has much as it did when I first got it. While I don’t think it is best feature and that it should be changeable, I give up and I’m just dealing with it.

In the last month I have downloaded 5 apps. Shazam. Pandora, Sportacular, Myspace, and Sudoufree. There have been a few apps that I have downloaded and didn’t like. The way I removed them was pressing the app until they jiggle around and press the “X” button on the side of it. Though in the last week the phone has been lagging. when I get a text message, when I press the button to read it, the screen will often to go gray and then probably 20 seconds later the message will appear.

Also when I am on the Safari, in the middle of reading something the phone will terminate the app and go to the home screen. Not a big deal, I just got right back into it and finish where I left off. It’s the lagging that is bothering me. It will sometimes do it when I go into the contacts. It won’t scroll for about 10 to 15 seconds. Finally it will let go and let me scroll. Does this have something to do with me deleting the unwanted apps the wrong way?

Also there are some apps that came with the phone, for example the stock app, that I don’t want on the phone. Though when I press the apps to get the jiggly thing, the “X” isn’t there to get rid of the app. Any ideas? Am I deleting the apps the wrong way?

I am peeved that there is no MMS, but not much I can do about that.

Anyways, do you guys have any ideas?

I have the same issue with the contacts and I have never deleted an ap. The only one I’ve even downloaded is Pandora.

If you really can’t delete one of the aps that comes with the phone, you can at least move it to the second page so that you don’t have to look at it.

Hey there, Mitch. I can totally relate to you. I’ve had my iPhone for about three weeks, and I’m suffering from the same annoyances.

Those text bubbles are such a pain. I always liked the option to save a text message, but this is no longer possible unless you keep the whole conversation. What a waste! Sometimes, I want to pull out my hair by the root! The pain is soothing, therapeutic, and liberating.

My phone is lagging some, too. When I access my contacts, it takes a few seconds for the menu to respond to my touch. Not really a big deal now, but I have a feeling this delay is going to get bigger and bigger in the weeks to follow.

And you are deleting apps the right way. At least, that’s how they say to do it on many official Apple websites. There must be some remnants of the application on your phone, though, just as you can never fully remove a file from your computer (even if you empty the recycle bin).

So yea, I guess I don’t have any ideas for you. But I’m here for you, because I’m going through the same nonsense. Let us hold each other for warmth and comfort.

The lagging and occasional crashes have happened to me as well, although, from your description, my experience has been better than yours (though I have the original iPhone, so that may be the reason, if you have the 3G).

As far as I know, you can’t delete the native apps, or hide the icons. The best you can do is move the icon to another screen so it’s out of the way.

I’ve seen the lagging you’re describing, and I think I’ve found the cause. The next time you see your keyboard lagging- and it seems to do it most in SMS- check to see how many Safari tabs you’ve got open. In my experience, I get the lag when I’ve got four or so tabs open- if I close down to just one tab, the lag goes away.

I’ve got a ton of apps, and I don’t normally see lag, now. I’ve also deleted quite a few.

The chat bubble don’t bother me one way or the other. My previous phone was a Windows Smartphone, and it did SMS so badly that the iPhone looks golden in comparison.

On the whole, I love my iPhone. Love it, love it, love it. I do have a few annoyances, though.

Syncing with my computer seems to take a LONG time.

I’d love to be able to sync my phone with both my home and work computers. As it is, I sync my email at work, and everything else at home.

Battery life is pretty short. I tend to keep 3G off as a result. I wish 3G either consumed less power, or that it would only turn 3G on when it really needs it (like when I use data).

I want color-coded calendar entries.

Copy-and-paste. Duh.

I’d like to be able to delete some of the default apps that I’ll never use.

Bluetooth- I want A2DP. Let me use my stereo bluetooth headset. The iPhone has the hardware to support A2DP, they just haven’t written the software.

WiFi syncing. I want my phone to automatically sync with my computer when I walk into my house. This is another no-brainer.

As I said, on the whole, I love my phone. There’re just a few annoyances that I’m surprised Apple hasn’t fixed.

I also forgot to mention that I hate, when a friend text me (that I may not have the number in my contacts,) that I have to write the phone number down and manually enter them into the contact list. Before on my black berry all I had to do it was save contact and it would ask me to imput the name.

I also hate that when I try to edit a contact info, that it will mistake a tap for a double tap and actually call the contact. Which leaves me going… “NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!” and hitting “end call” or whatever a number of times hoping that I got it before it actually went out.

I hate the black backround on the main screen. I would like to change that, but haven’t found a way to do that. Oh there is probably more, but I have to close shop…

Actually, I just tested this- all you have to do is open the text your friend sent you, and “Add to Contacts”… where you can then enter all the other pertinent information, like name and address. Or is this not what you’re looking for?

Anybody else having a problem with it updating the iPhone after a sync. I’ve had it run 12-16 *hours * sometimes. It’s a bit of a pain in the neck when it’s in the middle of a big process and I have to leave. I either interrupt it only to have to do it again or leave the phone at home.

I got notice of an update this morning (2.0.2 and had to leave it at home today because of it).

Interesting. I’d deleted a few apps in ‘shiver mode’ but lately I’ve been telling iTunes not to sync them when I sync the unit, and when I sync, it removes them. I was getting occasional Safari crashes as well, last night when reading the Apple page! I’ll have to check the number of pages open.

But I showed my co-workers the Koi Pond application. They liked.

I tell everyone that the iPhone is slower at everything it does, but it sure looks good while it is being slow. No matter how lethargic it is I wouldn’t go back to the Treo. I then go to show them RotaryDialer and they are transfixed, agreeing that it is a gorgeous, if cumbersome, way to dial.

For a really sweet app for showing your friends what it’s all about in a second or two, try Koi Pond. If you touch the screen the water splashes and the fish move. You can feed them and scare them away. If you leave your finger “in the water” they nibble on it. For a buck it’s a great app.

The sluggish behavior seems to be part of the iPhone 2.0 firmware. It wasn’t there before they released the new OS and new phones. It is annoying many iPhone users.

I just keep installing the latest firmware (2.0.2 the other day) and hoping that it is fixed. For now it seems to be better.

(checks iphone…)

Nope, it’s just as pokey.

It seems to load a large amount of each app fresh when you start the app. When I tap the address book, it takes 5 seconds before anything is usable.

Safari closing like it does is simply an app crash. That’s how apps crash: they disappear and you go back to the main screen. It should happen less and less as more mature firmware appears.

I took out my old Treo the other day and was so amazed at how “instant” everything was. Hit a button and the app instantly responds. Click on the app and it instantly changes to the next screen. Oh well. It sure looks good while it is being sluggish.

I don’t know much about the SMS app since I only send two or three messages a month.

About removing those unwanted apps: on a standard (unhacked) iphone, you are stuck with the original set of apps. Some folks just make an additional page on the main screen and drag the unwanted ones way off to the right. The Stocks app is the first one I would get rid of if they allowed us to do so, soon to be followed by the iTunes store.

FYI, there’s a new update which I’ve heard will help with keyboard lag.

I see it now. I completely missed it. Thanks.
