ios7 So SOOOO UGLY!

What the hell Apple? Oh, how I wish someone had warned me. So there’s the little 1 on my settings icon, warning me that I had a software update that needed to be downloaded. I finally got around to downloading it yesterday and I HATE it.

The icons are so ugly, the text is hideous, the designs look as if a second grader did them. Lots of counter-intuitive crap going on! The one thing people can usually count on with Apple is that, unlike MS, their upgrades usually make things better.

If you haven’t yet downloaded it, I highly recommend holding off until you have read some reviews.

GRRRRRR…

Oh yeah, and you can’t uninstall. And apparently there aren’t any jailbreak codes (or whatever they’re called) out there yet. I’ve never felt the need to jailbreak a device before, so this is a first.

I’m glad you started this thread. I was thinking about starting one from the opposite point of view. I installed ios7 on my iPhone 5 and iPad mini a week or so ago, and I honestly can’t see what all of the dislike is about. I generally like the visual differences and really like a couple of the new features, like the larger unlock screen elements and the new way to turn off apps.

For those who aren’t directly involved, here is a page showing the visual differences between ios6 on the left and ios7 on the right.

If there was a way to make the calendar NOT be ALL MOTHERFUCKING WHITE, I would be much happier.

Who the fuck downloads major firmware updates without checking online for reviews first? CanvasShoes, you’ve been here since December 2002 - there are about half a dozen posts in MPSIMS about iOS 7, you couldn’t even do a quick search? Here’s the google search for “site:straightdope.com ios7”.

Folks, don’t update your iDevices (ESPECIALLY major whole number upgrades) without doing 12 seconds of internet research.

That was going to be my question. I usually don’t download minor upgrades for Android before checking online, mainly to see if the upgrade has broken any of my favorite apps. And there’s no way i’ll do a major upgrade without spending some time checking out the reviews.

I do NOT know what came over me! I know, I know…and I’m so mad at myself. Normally I do. argh!!! I’m normally pretty computer savvy. No madskillz hacker or anything, but pretty decent at it.

My only defense is, I did it way late at night (more early morning hours actually) and I guess I was just halfway (mistakenly OBVIOUSLY) thinking it was a minor update of some sort. When I saw the little reminder, I didn’t read it closely enough. I wasn’t thinking (again, obviously) of it being a complete OS upgrade. I won’t be making this mistake again.

I don’t use Apple products much, but just looking at the comparison page I like iOS6 better.

I like a little more detail and 3 dimensionality to the icons, iOS7 looks much flatter and basic.

How Ugly Is It!!

It is dreadfully flat and basic, and yes, I liked the rounded, more 3D look to the old OS. I’m hoping my stupid mistake will save at least one person from going there.

Well, my upgrade is coming up in November (or maybe it’s this month?). I was gonna just stick with my iPhone, but maybe I’ll try one of the other brands, anyone got a suggestion? (sorry, this pit wasn’t very Pitlike).

I actually like the upgrade. I mean, other than the fact that it’s riddled with bugs and crashes. But I like the flat look, the transitions, the control center (worth the price of admission alone - easy access to wifi, bluetooth, airplane mode, do not disturb and orientation toggles, as well as a flashlight?!?), and the unlimited folder space.

One thing I really hate though, is that they changed the swipe motion to delete emails. It’s reversed now - which is a ridiculous change to make.

I have to admit, other than the look, I don’t mind the swipe. I haven’t gotten further into it to review some of the other features I’ve heard people praising. One thing that is also annoying is that it EATS the battery something fierce, what’s up with that? And yes, I’ve disabled the app refresh thing, and don’t have bluetooth on or anything.

What I hate the most is the fucking “Trust This Computer?” dialogue. It appears EVERY FUCKING TIME I plug my ipad/phone into my computer. It interrupts games if I plug in during a game. If I reboot with the device plugged in, it’ll ask me 2, 3 times.

And yes, I’ve tried every solution on the web for it. I’ve “untrusted”/“retrusted” my computer. I’ve “repaired” the apple mobile device program in prgrams/features. I’m using the actual Apple cable that came with the iPad. The cable is plugged into a usb that’s built into the motherboard, etc, etc.

I don’t even see what the point of this feature is, anyway. When you plug a new iDevice into a strange computer, a dialogue box appears asking you what you want to do (browse/play/etc).

Why does this fucking stupid feature even exist? What non-problem is it trying to solve?

Obviously it sees that the computer is owned by Fenris, and that is the issue.

When I first upgraded (2nd day it was available) my initial reaction was somewhere between negative and underwhelmed. There were aspects I liked in the new UI design right away and color schemes I just felt were fugly.

Now, having been using it for a few weeks I find I really like it. I don’t notice the colors that initially were so jarring. The new features like the Control Center are fantastic, much improved over the IOS6. I like the transitions and flat icons quite a bit. I still keep trying to delete emails by swiping the wrong way. The new calendar sucks, it is the only piece I really still struggle with in terms of usability.

All the wailing and teeth-gnashing makes me miss the nice, easy transition from OS 9.x to OS X. Everyone ooohed and aaahed over that new look.

I hated it at first but I am used to it now. There are options to turn off (lower) the zoom, and to increase the contrast. Both of those things helped me like it better. And I love the built-in flashlight.

I’m with you there. I much prefer the look of this OS to the old ones, but I’ve long hated the 3D and replicating the look of an icon’s real-life analogue. Then again, I think Pac-Man is graphically one of the most beautiful video games ever made, so you can see where I’m coming from visually.

I can’t tell if I think it’s really freaking ugly, or just unfamiliar. I’ll probably end up with it when I upgrade my device, but I’m going out of my way to put iOS 7 on an iPhone 4s.

I like it a lot. I think simpler is better in all things design, but especially in the design of a phone. The design is a lot more unified and the more coherent app design principles are already unifying the third-party apps designs.

The compass app is a great example of this. Beautiful, simple, and way better than the silly skeumorphic compass of old–plus they added a level to it! Brilliant!

Ah, so there’s a word for it. That’s what I was thinking of. I am so not a fan of skeumorphism.
