I’m not an iOS user, but some of the screenshots I’ve been seeing look quite similar to the visual style of Windows Phone 8 - in particular, the way that boxes and borders have been thrown away.
I’m not suggesting it’s copying that style - I think it’s more likely that the interface designers probably independently realised that putting boxes and borders around things is a holdover from desktop form/window metaphors - and is irrelevant on a device where things are not windowed.
I don’t have any problems with the upgrade, but then I am not a power user of my phone like many of you. My first impression when it was ready was that Apple replicated the fonts from the Andriod phones, a questionable move IMHO. The calender is so-so but if I really used it and it started to annoy me, there are probably dozens of calender apps I could install. The only thing that bugs me is the messages telling me that I have cellular data turned off for many apps I statrt
Other than the fact that some of the icons are beyond terrible (Safari, I’m looking at you), I really like iOS 7. The interface is much cleaner, control center is great, and the almost complete lack of skeumorphism makes me happy. Also, almost every built-in app is improved or better-looking.
No, they didn’t. Plenty of long-time Mac users hated Aqua.
I find the fine lines on white very hard to read and to find zero in on what I need. I also don’t like the new calendar set up. some of the new tricks are useful, but the “simple swipe up” to get to the cntrol panel takes me about 6 or 8 attempts, usually. Irritating.
Not sure if this helps you any but:
I set the default to bold text, which seemed to help me see things better.
The swipe up to get the Control Center took me a while to master as well until I realized that I had to start at the very bottom instead of the middle.
I don’t like all the white, but I do like most of the new features, so it’s a trade-off. I reduced culture shock by turning off the motion and the app refresh and turning on bold text and increasing the font and contrast.
Wow, it’s even *uglier *than I had first thought! The new Calender and Weather apps look terrible and what brain dead moron thought white text on neon green would be easy to read?
For me, it’s not so much that it looks ugly exactly. The general look, especially the new icons, seems to have been designed by a kid.
One feature I do like is the integration of messaging and the calendar. If you send/receive a text with a date or even a phrase like “Monday morning” you can tap on it and the calendar will open to the relevant day to set a reminder.
(I know it’ll probably turn out that this has been there since 5.xx but I only noticed it after this update.)
I was having the same problem, then I found that if I start the swipe with my thumb all the way off the bottom of the screen, down where the home button is, it works every time.
I love the new look. I didn’t realize how much I didn’t really like the skeuomorphic look until it was gone. To me, everything on that comparison page looks better in 7.
I like everything about the update except the calendar, which I am still finding nearly unusable. If there is a simple way to view a date and all of the events scheduled on that date in one screen, please let me know.
See, I liked the look of the old compass, it was pretty, and had lots of color and character, it looked like an old compass someone would hang in a boat or beach house. As opposed to just a black and white circle. But you’re right, it didn’t WORK as well as the new one. I had the girl at Verizon keep saying that the new OS WAS 3D while the old one wasn’t. I don’t think she knows what 3D actually means.
The phone number pad is the worst part of this. Big screen of white, with black circles and numbers inside. It literally looks like a kid drew it on a piece of paper with black pen, just hideous. I’m going to try the bold text thing someone mentioned.
I updated to ios7 last night, via itunes. I had not backed up my phone for a while, because my laptop had not been automatically backing up for about two months. I got my husband* to fix that issue, now that he’s home from the hospital, and I proceeded to sync my phone to itunes, then upgraded to ios7. I don’t mind the look, but all my apps are gone. WTF? I’m assuming theyre still there in itunes and I’ll have to manually reload them or something. Crap.
*And yes, I’m one of those women who depends on her husband for computer updates and stuff. He’s currently recovering from brain surgery, and I figure he can at least make himself useful with that, since he can’t clean litter boxes or load the dishwasher yet.
I’m not sure what causes that. But the easiest way to get them back on is connect your phone to your computer, and do it through iTunes. There’s an app management tab in there that will let you drag and drop all the apps you want, AND you can arrange them on your phone however you like.
As much as Windows8 gets me in a lather, I actually like ios7.1. Clean and to the point. Don’t really need anymore than what it gives.
And yes, of course I read many a review/conpasisom with ios6 before I went ahead with the upgrade – about two weeks after the original release which already included the first revision. It helps to be informed.
I like the iOS7 version of Control Center better than the one iOS6 had, but I miss being able to double-click the home button to get there. Now when you double-click, you get that windowpane scrolling thingy. Overall though I do like the new OS better.
Actually I found them - for some reason the second “page’” of apps was nearly empty, only 2 apps, and I thought I’d lost all the others. They’re still there, I just had to page over to them. :smack:
