iPhone screen cracked from 9" fall

How do I know it was nine inches? Because it slid off the top of my suitcase, which is the standard carry-on nine inches thick. Slid off onto asphalt, and there’s a crack running from the right edge near the bottom of the screen to the button.

It’s my own fault. I put it down on the (apparently) not entirely flat suitcase. I chose not to put a case on it. Still, I didn’t expect such a short drop to be sufficient to crack the screen.

Luckily, it seems to still work just fine, so I probably don’t need to replace anything. Though I’m sure if I drop it again, it’s way more likely to really break.

This is why I can’t have nice things.

My last phone (a Blackberry) was severely cracked from falling from a short distance. I think it’s all about where it hits. If it lands in just the right (wrong) spot, it shatters.

If you ever decide it needs fixing, I’ve had luck w/ UBreakIFix. I had a repair done at one of their retail locations in Chicago and they did good work for a decent price, but the bulk of their repairs are done via mail.

Yeah, it’s totally dependent on the point of impact; there seem to be a few weak spots (like anything with angles and corners) that will crack really easily. Meanwhile, I’ve had my iPhone 4 (out of a case) slide off of a bathroom sink onto the tile floor, a chest-high bookshelf onto a hardwood floor and once (in a case) had it fall out of my pants pocket* and clatter/slide along a tile floor at work.

:o

Totally fine, though!

Useful tip if your phone breaks after the 1 year warranty is up (and you didn’t get extended care):

If you bought it with a credit card, check to see if they provide an extended warranty. American Express has a nice extended warranty policy that will give you another full year after Apple’s warranty expires at no cost. Insert disclaimers about water damage, yadda yadda.

  • Because women don’t want pant pockets that are deeper than 3"

I know this isn’t going to make you feel better, but last week I forgot my keys and texted my wife to toss hers down from our fourth floor apartment.

She appeared sooner than expected and when I reached out my hands to catch them, my Atrix was still in my left hand, screen up. A set of six keys, with a clunky keyring, hit the screen full on.

I just about died from dismay, until I realized that there wasn’t a scratch on it. Gorilla glass is kick ass!!

Otterbox, Otterbox, Otterbox.

I’d probably be on my 9th iPhone by now if not for my Otterbox.
