Can’t link cause its subscription only, but this weeks Economist claimed that the majority of Israeli’s believe that the Gaza withdrawl was a prelude to a unilateral withdrawl from the West Bank under Israeli terms. Given that this isn’t what Saron claims, I’d say that that means most Israelis belive it to be a “trick” as well.
Pretty sure most of them still disagree with Iran on the issue of their being wiped off the map, though.
Just pointing out that a) there’s already an active thread on this subject in this forum and b) so far as I know, there is nothing particularly new about Iranian officials making anti-Israeli statements of this nature. Also, why did you put “President” in quotes? Is that not the title of Mr. Ahmadinejad’s office?
At least we know very clearly where Mr. Ahmadinejad stands on this issue. I’ve read many times on this board that this is a virtue.

Yes… about 10 minutes before I posted this someone else posted about the Iranian leader calling for the extermination of Israel. I apologise for not noticing this and I apologise for a secondary thread about this disturbing development.
I am ok with this thread being closed in deference to the other one. It was not my intention to open a second thread… 10 minutes is a long time but I really should have searhed the forums. Please believe me it was not my intent to open a second thread :I
And as I said, I was just pointing the existence of the other thread, so please try not to get too bent out of shape about it.
Really, what I’m much more interested in is whether you think there is something new and unprecedented about the sentiments expressed by Mr. Mr. Ahmadinejad, and what, if anything should be done about them. I think we can pretty much guarantee a White House statement deploring his remarks, but any other US options seem to be rather limited short of some sort of military punishment strike (for Iran’s President having making a belligerent speech?). As far as Iran is concerned, if Mr. Ahmadinejad actually believes that another wave of suicide bombings on its own will magically dissolve Israel, he must be very naive indeed.
Seems to me nothing much to do here by the US, at this time. I would not presume to speak for Israel, but it seems to me that if a new wave of suicide bombings occurs and if these are tied to Iran through financing or logistics, that country is perfectly capable of mounting an appropriate response.
I hope that people here don’t forget that under President Khatami a pro-western youth reform movement was very big, and that this was the time that Bush decided to brilliantly refer to Iran as part of the “Axis of Evil” making Iranians fear an imminent US attack, and gave the Imams the opportunity to say “See, see, we are right about the western infidels!”
