Iraq and weapons

Pardon my ignorance.

I am sure there is an answer but I just don’t know. I am not anti-war or anything I just have a question…

Why are we allowed to have weapons or mass destruction, but Iraq is not?

A few people have asked me this question and I have no idea why.

We don’t threaten the stability of our region. We don’t threaten to use them. We don’t use them on our own people. Look at Saddam’s history. He invaded a country just 12 years ago. He has threatened to use weapons of mass destruction… but now claims he has none. He’s an evil liar and must be brought down.

Because we are big enough, and tough enough, to decide for ourselves who is allowed to have WMD and who is not.

No we don’t threaten to use them, but the fact that we have them is part of our defence. Our enemies are scared we will use them.

Yes, he invaded a country 12 years ago. why not stop untill he is brought down then instead of waiting 12 years?

This reminds me of the movie minority report. Stop the criminal before the crime happens.

I just don’t get it, why is this such an issue now?

I am not against it, just playing devils advocate in my head… I just don’t know the facts.

If I am the most powerful and popular kid on the playground, and you are not my friend, and I have a big stick…do you think I’m gonna let you carry one too? No, especially not if you told me if you had a stick, you would hit my best friend (Israel) with it.

Because America has the weapons and the power to claim the title of strongest nation in the world, we have begun to police the globe. We can use our large military arsenal to back any desires we have. If someone (like Saddam) pisses us off, we have nothing stopping us from treating him however we please.

We ARE the bully on the playground, the asshole that everyone would love to see get hit in the head during dodgeball. That’s why we are so subject to terrorism. Everyone who has ever played ona school playground at recess knows that you can’t come out and challenge the bully…you’d lose miserably. But if you attacked him in underhanded, cowardly ways that was the only way to get back at him. It’s kinda silly to think that those little politics we learned on the playground now shape the world we live in.

what happens if all these rumors are true about China constantly making bigger and better weapons and they become the strongest nation, and say to the US… get rid of your weapons…

would we do it?

Well I think that depends a whole lot on which countries were backing China, which countries were neutral, and which countries were on our side. If we had any plausible way of defeating China in the ensuing war, I think that we would not give up our weapons and instead declare war.

More like a background check for gun buyers. You don’t want to allow a weapon in the hands of someone who has a history of using them in non-self-defense situations.

Because after 9/11/2001, Bush decided that America must be pro-active rather than recactive about potential threats.

GD material if I ever saw it. We are allowed to have WMD because no one is yet in a position to tell us we can’t and enforce. Saddam Hussein is an Joseph Stalin wannabe that only lacks all the resources to reach his goals. We don’t allow him to have WMD because we know what he would do.
