Iraq: meet the new boss, same as the old boss

From The Oregonian:

We rescued the Iraqis from Saddam, only to hand them over to a new bunch of thugs? This must be some new meaning of ‘safe’…ah hell, you know.

And apparently had to hand them back over to their torturers anyway.

Which is where the troops from Oregon found them.

It’s a long article. It’s hard reading. There’s a photo gallery with it; you can find the link there. I haven’t had the guts to open it, so I’m not going to link to it here.

I wonder, did the Bush administration have Ayad Allawi in mind before they began the invasion? Have they ever stated (before or after) that he was always the guy they had in mind to lead the country until the 1st elections? Or was he just the best guy they could find when the time came when they had to choose someone?

I think they originally had Chalibi on tap as the US-Blessed Version of George Washington For Iraq™, but when he proved to be politically untenable, they went trollin’ for somebody else.
