Ireland bound

I’m going to Dublin, Ireland in about a week for St. Patricks Day. I’ll be there for about 4 days. Any suggestions on what to see or do?

Meet me and Yojimbo for a pint.

Since this is asking for opinions, it’s better suited for IMHO.

Me and a mate spent five days in Dublin about a month ago, and had an excellent time. We based most of our wanderings on the Lonely Planet Dublin Encounter Guide. It’s compact, breaks the city up into four regions and lists thins to do, places to eat and interesting information. The map’s not great, but I found Dublin really easy to get around, and we walked basically everywhere. Where are you staying, and what are you keen on doing/seeing?

I particularly enjoyed a cafe called Queen of Tarts, it’s oh so delicious. Try the apple and blackberry crumble. It’s happiness, crumble-style.

Also it’s really worth checking out the Kilmainham Jail, which I (knowing next to nothing about Irish history) found really interesting and not at all touristy. The guide was really friendly and knew his stuff, and didn’t seem to mind at all when I said ‘wait, there was an uprising and *then * a civil war? I never head about a civil war!’

Enjoy your holiday!

Visit the Guinness Storehouse! When you pay admission, you get a small paperweight-type thing with a drop of guinness sealed inside and a plastic tab attached to it. After you make your way through the fascinating levels and you get to the Gravity bar on the very top, you take that plastic tab off and hand it to the bartender…he gives you a pint in return!
Then you find a spot and gaze out the windows to see all of Dublin from above.

Just a little north of Dublin is Newgrange and Knowth. Fascinating stuff that.

The Book of Kells at Trinity was pretty cool, but I’m not sure it was worth the cost of admission.

Heck, we spent a couple of days just aimlessly wandering around and enjoyed every minute of it.

Have you had a look at what events are on for the St. Patrick’s Festival?

Trinity college tour was good. The students give the tour and the one that we had was a riot, and knew his stuff.

Energetic Irish trad influenced band Kila are playing in Dublin’s Olympia Theatre on March 17th. They’re one of the best live bands in Ireland.
