Ireland has civil partnership

We voted it in last week.

Just FYI.

Is it one of those cases where it works exactly like “marriage before a justice of the peace (or whatever other government agent performs them in that country)” but gets a different name so if it’s “partnership” it means same-gender and if it’s “marriage” it means different-gender? Or are there any differences?

Gosh, that was one long and complicated question, sorry.

There are differences - they still can’t jointly adopt etc.

But they get rights in terms of leaving stuff to each other etc.

Not as far as I’d like but it’s a good start. Another move away from Rome Rule.

Now they can (nearly) be as miserable as the rest of us.

Was the Civil Partnerships Act in the UK extended to N Ireland?

Yes, in fact I think the first Civil Partnership registered in the UK involved a terminally ill man in Northern Ireland who got the waiting period waved.

I’m not even gonna ask this time; I’m just sending over the hookerbot menu. I’ll charge it to Prince Harry’s account; he’ll never notice.

Never hear the quip, “I support gay marriage, why shouldn’t they be as miserable as the rest of us?”
