When I moved into my new house a couple of months ago I noticed a grey “thing” above the front door, and an ethernet cable hanging out of the wall in an upstairs bedroom… I’ve since been told that they are for Wireless Broadband, but no one can tell me anything more. The previous occupants of the house emigrated and I’ve no way to contact them to ask. I Googled and the only thing I can find is a number for a place in Cork, but when I phoned they denied all knowledge of offering Wireless Broadband in West Cork… I’ve managed to decipher that it says CANOPY on the grey thing above the door, Google pulls up a load of American sites.
Canopy is a proprietary wireless broadband system made by Motorola that I have some experience with from the provider side. I don’t think this will help much though because you need to know what company has deployed the system in your area to get service.
I did a little Googling and found this site that offers wireless broadband in Cork. One of the former executives at a Canopy wholesaler in Ireland started the company.
Adding to what Moe said, Canopy is not the “end” solution. What you apparently have is a “repeater” station, you’ll still have to buy hardware (routers, PC cards, etc.) to interface with it.
Canopy is not 802.11b/g compatible. It’s designed to spread broadband wirelessly over a large area (such as a college campus, small city, downtown area, etc.) and then routers carry the last haul to the end user.
At least this is how I remember it from my past life as a Motorola dealer. Please correct me if I’ve misstated something.;
