I’m watching a DVD now that had a preview for Left Behind: World at War, of all things, and then a preview for Rent. Flabbered my gaster, it did. Anybody got a stranger pairing than that, at the theater or at home?
In 1989 my brother and I went to the Shattuck Theatre in Berkeley to see New York Stories. Keep in mind this is Berkeley and a decidedly Woody Allen crowd.
The trailer was for a Dutch action/adventure flick complete with explosions and baritone voice-over. The crowd was already rolling in the aisles when the exploding speedboats came flying through the canals and the announcer called on everyone to see: AMSTERDAMNED!
I’m a big fan of New York Stories, I’ve watched it several times over the years (Especially the Scorcese segment, Life Lessons), but nothing was as entertaining for the crowd that night as that trailer…
You got me curious.
Relive the memory. The trailer is here.
I’m still waiting on pins and needles for that trailer to load, grrr! Oh, I didn’t mention, the DVD with Rent and Left Behind was The Gospel, which I really quite enjoyed - I mean, it wasn’t a great movie or anything, and nothing if not predictable, but it had a lot of great music in it and a lot of respect for urban black religiosity which I haven’t really seen in too many other movies. Plus, the lead actor was seriously fine. I guess they were thinking Left Behind for the God content and Rent for, er, the singing?
