I’ve seen this “in joke” on the SDMB lots and lots of times, but I’m embarrassed to admit, I don’t get it. Sounds like a reasonable occurance to me, after all what ElSE would a cat’s breath smell like? (wait, don’t answer that, I am pretty sure I don’t want to know :))
Sorry. I’m new to posting here–I often forget that sometimes SMDBers quote people at the end of their post and not the beginning. Quite confusing. Just read the quote from top to bottom: asking LordAshtar ‘what the hell’, and quoting you as a reference (he did what you said someone would do).
If there ever was an OP I agree with, this would be it. Maybe I’m just a humor elitist and I prefer that jokes be fresh and original, rather than cookie-cutter and pathetic. And now someone’s going to come in and get all smarmy and apologize for offending me, the arbiter of what’s funny and what’s not. But you know what? If there’s an OP that rants, for example, against that goddamned rolleyes smiley, posting a goddamned rolleyes smiley in response just isn’t clever. There’s a reason why 17 other people have beat you to it; the joke was so obvious and lame that anyone could have thought of it. <Will Ferrell as Harry Caray>A baby could have thought of it!</WFaHC>
Same with posting “When come back, bring pie” to an incoherent/trollish OP.
And now I predict that someone will come in and tell me not to read the threads in question. But why should I? If I think I have something insightful to add, why shouldn’t I read them? What substance does “When come back, bring pie” (or the zillions of other stupid responses) add?
Just to clarify, I rarely (if ever) see anyone on the SDMB bottom-quote (putting quoted material that you’re responding to at the bottom of a post rather than at the top). Don’t want any new posters out there to think that’s the way people do it and start doing it. It is extremely confusing. (I think there are some message boards where that is the default when you hit “reply with quote”.)
I wonder if the OP posts on /. to bitch about “In Soviet Russia” or “3. ??? 4. Profit!” jokes? What, you’ve never heard the expression “Don’t sweat the small stuff”? Get a fucking grip already. Kvetching threads like this are inevitably far more annoying than the behaviour they kvetch about. So why did I even open this one? Good question! Maybe I’ll pit the OP and his ilk, just to complete my inconsistency.
